Panthers make WOSSA playoffs EXETER - The South Huron District High School field hockey team earned a berth at the WOSSA playoffs after winning the Hu- ron -Perth Championship on Monday. The Panthers began the H -P playoffs with an easy win over Lis- towel in the semi-finals on Thursday. Cara Gardner led the scoring spree with three goals while team- mates Shawna Koehler, Laura Skinner, Shawna Rowe and Lori Richardson scored one to lift South Huron to a 7-1 win. The final against Mitchell though wasn't as easy. JoDee Rowe and Gardner scored to put the Panthers up by two but Mitchell wasn't ready to bow out easily as they scored in the second half of the game but couldn't force a tie. "They certainly came to put on a good show and they didn't dis- appoint themselves," said coach Jim Workman. The tough fight Mitchell put up wasn't new to the girls on the team. They met some fierce competition in a non-league tournament on Saturday when they played Agincourt, the top ranked high school team in Toronto, to a scoreless tie. Their second game against Park- hill was also an end-to-end battle but South Huron came up on top 2-1 thanks to Shawna Rowe who scored both goals for the Panthers. The remainder of the tournament was cancelled due to poor weath- er conditions, but the two games they did play may prove to be a valuable experience for the team. "It will be a good warm-up for WOSSA," said Workman. South Huron will travel to Ridley College in St: Catharines on Thursday .to compete ,in the WOSSA playoffs: A successf it run in pool play action will put them in the semi-finals and finals sched- uled for Friday. Last year the Panthers cruised through the WOSSA playoffs and entered the OFSAA tournament as defending champions. But their bid for another All -Ontario title was dashed when they came up short in a penalty stroke shootout. Before the team can think about an OFSAA re -match they must first clinch WOSSA this week, something player Preslee Mauer is confident they can do. "We want to win it all...we're hungry," she said. Exeter Chiefs win league opener TIL SONBURG - The Exeter Chiefs juvenile team opened their 1996-97 season with a win on Sun- day after defeating Tillsonburg 7- 1. Jeremy Stewart pumped in three goals for Exeter while Paul Knight, Marty DeBruyn, Ryan Soldan and Gavin Snell added one goal each. - Head coach Henri DeBruyn cred- its the win to a disciplined team ef- fort and some solid goaltending from Dennis Roth. "The play was sloppy at times, but all in all I was happy with their performance. They kept their cool and stuck to hockey," he said. There are eight returning vete- rans on this year's squad and De- Bruyn said he is optimistic they will mix well with the young talent on the team. Last season the Chiefs had a suc- cessful run in the playoffs eliminat- ing cross town rival St. Marys be- fore dethroning Aylmer, last year's defending champions, in the quar- ter -finals. However, Exeter was swept in three games by the Listowel Cy- clones in the semi-finals as Listow- el went on to win the league cham- pionship. The Chiefs will play at home (South Huron Recreation Centre) on Saturday night as they host Aylmer for an 8 p.m. game, before they take to the road three days lat- er to play Port Stanley.
