South Huron District High School cross country runners qualify for WOSSA at Huron -Perth meet WINGHAM - The South Hu- ron District High School cross country team produced three Huron -Perth champions last Wednesday at F.E. Madill last Wednesday. Erin Robilliard won the midget girls individual ti- tle. Her teammates Kristen Brooks fin- ished third, Brenda El- ford placed fourth and Fallon Giles placed sixth easily defeating the other midget teams. Coach Joe Fulop said it was an ap- propriate finish for the girls who raced very well in their last three starts. "All four have a good shot at WOSSA. They've placed very high in their last few races," said Fulop. The junior boys team had a very tough battle running head - to -bead with a strong Madill en- try, but prevailed by only eight points. Christian Stuckless ran a per- sonal best placing second. Dan Snell was a close this'd, Dave Robilliard earned a hard-fought fifth place and Matt Szabo came inat a very strong eighth They were supported by top 25 finishes by Shawn Stuckless and Matt Knox. Matt Verhoog ran a personal best time as well placing 30th. Other team members, Joey Forrester, Brian Harrigan and Tim Hundey helped this victory by running a strong MCC "This is the best junior team we ever bad. They have a lot of talent, a lot of grit, these guys don't quit," said Fulop who couldn't disguise his pride for the junior boys team. `Their goal was to win Huron -Perth and they've been successful from the start." The junior girls had to qual- ify as individuals and did so with Mandy Rolph finishing eighth and Michelle Finkbelner placing ninth. The entire team qualified for WOSSA which will be held at Springbank Park on October 24. The junior boys will enter the competition ranked among the top three teams. The midget girls are ranked in the top five. • Hawks on a six game win streak By Chris Skalkos T -A Reporter DELHI - The Exeter Hawks are on a six game winning streak after defeating Delhi 5-1 on Sunday and Mitchell 4-3 on Friday night. After a slow first period in Delhi the Hawks found themselves tied at one with Joe McDonald notching the first goal off an assist from Bill Hodge. The second period was a different story as Exeter shook off the cob- webs and exploded with three goals scored by Chad Gilfillan, Sean McCann and Jeff Glavin. They were assisted by Dave Farquhar, Chris Kennedy and Craig Cor- riveau. Corriveau sealed the game in the third scoring an unassisted pow- erplay goal in the last two minutes of the game. The long two hour bus drive to Delhi may have been the reason for the slow start, but Exeter couldn't use that excuse for the poor start against Mitchell at home on Friday. Again, the Hawks looked weak in Lucan steals a win from Port Stanley LUCAN - A combination of a hot goaltender and five young players called up from the midget league helped the Lucan Irish steal a game from Port Stanley last Wednesday. Despite being outshot 37-25, Lucan beat Port Stanley 3-2 in a low penalty high intensity game. Ryan Baynham and Bob Grant scored for Lucan in the first period giving their team a 2-1 edge after the first 20 minutes. But from that point on it was Port Stanley's game as they peppered Lucan goalie Nathan Maudsley with 18 shots, but they couldn't get anything past him in the : xond period. Lucan capitalized on one of its five shots on net when Josh Appleman scored late in the fratne. Port Stanley came out strong again in the third period scoring another goal to come within one, hut Maudsley shut the door to preserve the lead and win the game. "From the second period on he was the difference in this hockey game," said assistant coach Jay Bukala. "He stole a game we prob- ably didn't deserve to win." Lucan entered the game missing its four top forwards, but midget players, Ryan Carroll, Rob Silver, Jeremy Cornish, Pat Conlin and Scott Thompson were called up to replace them and they scored two points in the process. "Those kids worked hard to fill that void for us and when our goaltender wasn't stopping pucks they were doing the job," said Bu - kala. Lucan vs, Hagersville On Saturday Lucan made a return trip to Hagersville emerging with one point after the game ended in a 5-5 tie. Scott Thompson scored three goals, two of which were unassisted, to claim the team's first hat trick of the season. Ryan Baynham, and Bob Grant scored the other two goals. Again, the Irish were missing some players and head coach George Pratt said he was happy with the point on the road. Lucan will see action on Friday night when they host the North Middlesex Stars. the first period allowing Mitchell to go up by two goals. And again, they rebounded with a strong sec- ond period pumping in four goals as Dan Taylor, Geoff Mayer, Joey MacDonald and Jeff Glavin all found the back of the net in the sec- ond frame. "They were all over us in the first period. We're not getting out of the gates very quickly," said assistant coach Jeff Dalrymple: The third period was also a shod- dy 20 minutes for the Hawks as they were outshot 15-5 allowing Mitchell to come within one goal of tieing the game. Dalrymple said that was due to a shift in strategy as Exeter went into a defensive mode to protect its , lead. It was a strategy that almost failed and Dalrymple credits Mitch- ell for making it a close game. 'They're a young and fast team and they'll outwork you for 60 min- utes if you don't pick them up," he said. Even though Exeter is undefeated in six games the coaching staff say it's too early in the season to get excited about their winning record. Dalrymple admits they've had an easy schedule and haven't en- countered much competition since the start of the regular season, how- ever, that will change when the Hawks host Tavistock on Friday. Tavistock is currently leading the McConnell Conference in the Jun- ior "D" league with five wins and two losses. Exeter will be tested again 'on Saturday as they meet Mount Brydges, the only other un- defeated team in the league. "It's going to get a lot tougher from now on," he said. Dalrymple declined to make any comparisons between the team's performance and last year's record when the Hawks began the season with an unprecedented winning streak that eventually helped them to a first place finish. It's a new season with a different team, but one thing that has remained the same is the fan support the team has enjoyed since the beginning of last season. Home games are well attended and a strong nucleus of dedicated fans follow the team dur- ing their road games as well. "I think we have, the best fan sup- port out of the 113 teams in this league," said Dalrjrmple adding that about 30 people made the two hour drive to Delhi to cheer the Hawks on. "That was really nice to see."
