Bell well adjusted
to new role in
Junior "B" league
STRATHROY - Hard work and determination has paid off for
Mark Bell from Hensall.
After a two year tour with the Ex,:cer Junior "D" Hawks, Bell, 17,
has broken into the Junior "B" league with the Strathroy Rockets
and is currently one of their top point getters.
Bell signed with Strathroy in July after team management asked
him to skate with their prospect team over the
summer. His role with the Hawks last season
made it difficult for the scouts to ignore him.
After earning 15 points in 26 games during the
regular season, Bell became a major force for
the Hawks scoring nine goals and eight assists
during the playoffs earning the Best Defence -
man Award. His outstanding performance
helped Exeter to their fust O.H.A. Junior "D"
Championship in 20 years and caught the atten-
tion of the Strathroy scouts who had been
watching him since the beginning of the year.
Bell said he has adjusted well to the Junior
"B" ranks, but finds the level of hockey faster.
"It's just as tough (as Junior "D") but it's
twice as fast and I think it's more intense," said Bell.
It hasn't taken him long to find his groove at this level. Although
he is still searching for his first goal, Bell has five assists so far into
the season with Strathroy and is among the top five point getters on
the team.
The Rockets are currently tied for first place with a 6-1-1 win-
less -tie record.
Known for his low and- hard trademark slapshot, Bell said he
hasn't lost any offensive. punch, but has encountered a number of
talented goalies that have made him realize earning a notch in. the
goals scored column is a challenging feat in this league.

•
Only eight games into the season, Bell said he has already noticed
a difference in his game, something that becomes evident when he is
watching a team video tape.
"I've noticed certain things I do now I wouldn't have done last
year. I seem to be settling down and playing with more confidence,"
he said.
Mark Bell
During his two years with the Hawks he had gained a reputation
for being a disciplined defenceman, something that has earned him
an assistant captain position with Strathroy.
"1 was really surprised. The coach said he saw some leadership
qualities in me and thought they might have an impact on the other
playas," he said, but admitted that wearing an "A" on his jersey
came with a lot of responsibility.
Bell, who is a product of the Henson and Exeter Minor Hockey
systems, said winning an ATI -Ontario Championship with the Hawks
last March was a nice way to end his Junior "D" career and is al-
ready yearning for another provincial title with his new team.
