uniforms at home opener

T -A Reporter
EXETER - A new season a new
look.
The Exeter Hawks will wear their
nets unilirrms as they take on Ayr
in their much anticipated home
opener at the South Huron Rec-
reation ('entre on Friday night.
Hawk an is ill see their team in
action wearing. for the lirst time,
nes jerseys brandishing a modern
logo keeping with their traditional
colors of yellow and black.
Head coach Dave Revington and
assistant coach Jeff Dalrymple said
the new uniforms were purchased
because the old ones were worn out
and needed to be replaced. The
team- sponsors paid for the uni-
forms which will display a business
name on the home and away shirts.
Player Sean McCann came up
with the idea for the 90's looking
Hawk on the front of the shirts, an
image inspired by the bold look of
the NHL Washington Capitals'
' Exeter Junior "D" Hawks Chris McDonald, left, and Jason
McBride pose with the team's new uniforms. Hockey fans
will see the "new look Hawks" in action for their home"
opener on Friday night.
Simpson inducted
to Hall of Fame
KiRKTON - Whcn the telephone rings for Theresa Simpson, it's
probably someone wanting to congratulate her.
Simpson has just given birth to her third child recently and she's
fielding calls from friends and family sending their best wishes.
They arc also congratulating her for being inducted into the Uni-
versity of Windsor's Athletic Hall of Fame on
Sunday. ,
Sirnpson played varsity basketball from 1980-
85 while studying Human Kinetics at the Uni-
versity of Windsor.
During that time she was named the MVP
four out of five years, she holds numerous re -
hounding, career points per game and career re -
hounds per game records. in 1981 she made the
first OWiAA All-Star team and continued to
make the All-Star team again in 1983, '84 and
'85 . She was named OWIAA athlete of the
week twice for posting a combined two -game,
48 point and 26 rebound performance and was
nominated for a CIAO All-Star award during the 1984-85 season.
Many of the point and rebound records she has set still remain to-
day.
Despite her contributions to the womens' basketball program at
Windsor Simpson was surprised to be nominated in her first year of
cligihilily.(nominations arc only open to alumni of 10 years) She
was also surprised at the number of past teammates who showed up
to watch her induction.
Her achievements at Windsor helped launch a post -varsity bas-
ketball career in Europe as she played for a semi-professional Tier
one league in Jonkoping. Sweden. While playing her first inter-
national basketball game she marked her personal best performance
scoring 40 points.
"It seemed like everything 1 put up went in," she recalled:
in the last nine years, Simpson has continued to involve herself in
athletics as a teacher and a coach at St. Mary's High School in
Woodstock where she teaches physical education and math. She also
coaches both basketball and volleyball and is involved in an OMHA
all women's ice hockey team.
Theresa currently lives with her husband Bob and three children
on a 80 acre dairy farm between Kirkton and St. Marys.
Theresa Simpson
logo. Revington believes fans will
appreciate the new design.
"It's the sponsors and the people
who come through the door that
help pay the bills and we want to
put a good product on the ice for
them... contemporary jerseys are
one aspect of that," he said.
New uniforms are are only one of
the contributions the club is making
to keeping a successful Junior "D"
hockey program in Exeter. Ex-
ecutives used extra funds generated
from the long 1995-96 season to
renovate the Hawk's dressing room
which is now larger and has in-
dividual lockers for each player.
"The financial commitments we
make all comes back to the
players," said Revington adding
that he hopes it will attract potential
players in the Exeter minor hockey
system.
However the team's new look
goes beyond the jerseys they're
wearing. With seven players from
the 1995-96 championship team not
returning to the line-up this year the
Hawks have added youth and size
to replace the experience they lost.
Absent players, Steve Farquhar,
Greg Dalrymple, Sean Brown,
Mark Livermore, Shayne Robinson
and Mark Bell combined for 200
points last year and goalie Dave
Nahrgang who blossomed during
the playoff season will also be
missed.
Filling their shoes are a talented
group of rookies led by Chad Gil-
fillan, Brody Cochlan, John Rutten
and Dave Farquhar, who played
three games with the Hawks last
year.
Defenseman Greg Goodwin who
has,sorne junior "B" hockey under
his belt, and newcomer.Ryan Freiy
er will add some size to the de-
frnsive squad while 15 returnees
who played on last year's cham-
pionship team will inject some ex-
perience into the raw talent and size
the Hawks have inherited this year.
"We're more balanced. De-
fensively we have a solid and ex-
perienced team with some fire-
power," said Dalrymple.
Undoubtedly, there will be more
pressure to win this year as the
team defends their provincial title,
but Dalrymple promises they won't
RINGETTE,
lay down and give the O.H.A. jun-
ior "D" crown away. The players
who have had a taste of what it
feels like to be an All -Ontario
champion are still motivated from
last year and the rookies will want
it that much more.
"Every team will want to come in
to Exeter and take two points
away...it should be good hockey,
the fans will enjoy it," he added.
However, Revington remains
cautious. He knows the only thing
more challenging than winning a
championship title is defending it.
"I think we're playing in the
toughest division in the league and
we expect every team will be im-
proved this year," said Revington.
The Hawk's Friday night home
opener will also be complemented
by a small ceremony honoring the
1995-96 players after the game.
They will be presented with their
championship rings in the foyer
while a traditional banner will be
unveiled.
Hawks vs Port Stanley
The Exeter Hawks won their sec-
ond game of the season defeating
Port Stanley 5-4 in overtime on Sat-
urday.
Sean McCann scored the tieing
goal with less than three minutes
left to play, and then scored 54 sec-
onds into the overtime period to lift
Exeter past Pori Stanley in the
close and chippy game.
"Sean has had a great pre -season
and it looks like that's going to car-
ry through," said assistant coach
Jeff Dalrymple.
McCann, who recorded a total of
four points that night, was set up on
both the tieing and winning goals
by his line -mate Jeff Glavin.
It was the rookies that stole the
show during their season opener
against St. George, but it was the
veterans who pulled through for
Exeter on Saturday as Chris Ken-
nedy, Ryan Chamney, Chris McDo-
nald, Craig Corriveau and Mike
Bowerman notched goals.
"We fell asleep in the second pe-
riod, but we made up for it in the
third," Dalrymple said.
The Hawks are now 2-0 in regu-
lar season play.

Lucan Irish win home opener
LUCAN - After scoring five goals in the second
period of their home opener against the North Mid-
dlesex Stars last Wednesday, the Lucan Irish almost
let a three goal lead slip away in the third, but hung
on to win 5-4.
"Whether you win by 10 or win by one it's still
two points in the win column," said head coach
George Pratt.
Chad Greenlee, Bob Grant, Josh Appleman, An-
drew Stratton and George Stephens scored for Lu -
can in the second, but the Irish couldn't add to the
scoreboard in the third as they watched North Mid-
dlesex come within one goal of tieing the game.
"Their goalie was the biggest difference. We had
a lot of scoring chances we couldn't finish," said
Pratt. The shots on net testified to that as Lucan out -
shot the Stars 35-29. "Parkhill has a good hockey
club. I give them full credit for making it a one goal
game," he added.
The much bigger Stars had a tremendous size ad-
vantage over the Irish which was noticeable along
the boards and in the corners, but Lucan used this to
their advantage on open ice as they tap danced
around their hefty opponents and looked comfort-
able passing the puck around in the offensive zone.
"Our speed is the biggest part of our game," said
Pratt adding it was nice to start the season with a
win.
However, their speed couldn't save them in their
next game as they lost to Mount Brydges 4-1 on
Saturday.
Mike Bodnar scored Lucan's only goal unassisted
while on a powerplay in the second period.
The Irish will try to rebound from the loss tonight
(Wednesday) when they host Seaforth for an 8:15
game.
