Exchange students cross cultures for an education By Chris Skalkos T -A Reporter EXETER - Sometime today, a 14 -year-old girl in Exeter will sit in front of a computer to read an E- mail letter from her family living half way around the world. Karen Fox is from Queenstown, New Zealand. She is living with the O'Rourke family in Exeter while participating in a one-year private exchange program with Meaghan O'Rourke, also 14. Fox and O'Rourke met when the O'Rourke family was in New Zea- land in 1993 during a teacher ex- change program. While her father Terry was teaching physical educa- tion, coaching basketball and learn- ing the sport of rugby, O'Rourke and Fox had formed a friendship that would eventually result in a private exchange. Fox would come to Canada from August to January and O'Rourke would live in New Zealand, with Fox's family, for the remaining six months. Both will continue their academic studies in their host country; and Fox is currently attending grade nine at South Huron District High School. Since her arrival in Canada, Fox Candidates in Clinton CLINTON - The Ontario Liberal Leadership candidates will be in the Huron riding this Thursday eve- ning, October 10, at the Clinton Le- gion Hall. Each of the seven candi- dates will give a brief talk followed by a question and answer session with the audience. The party membership will vote for their choice of leader and local convention delegates on October 19. The new leader of the Ontario Liberal Party will be selected at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on November 30. This person will re- place Lyn McLeod and become the official Leader of the Opposition for Ontario. TMEVE CROSS AORD% HE KNO AND IC For angers please turn to the Announcements has enjoyed the usual tourist attrac- tions with the O'Rourkes-Niagara Falls, Canada's Wonderland, white water rafting in Ottawa and a sce- nic train ride through northern On- tario. However, it's the things we take for granted that have amused her most. "I like to look at corn fields be- cause I've never seen them before," said Fox who would normally gaze at a snow capped mountain land- scape while in her homeland. In a country with 60 million sheep, lamb is a staple on any menu and she is overwhelmed by the va- riety of North American dishes made without Iamb. Driving on the right hand side of the road is some- thing she will never get used to, and standing for the playing of our national anthem before morning classes begin seems strange since this isn't done in New Zealand schools . O'Rourke said since she has al- ready been to New Zealand for an extended period of time she under- stands the culture shock Fox is go- ing.ihraugh..... _.__....•- . "People who live here are not ex- cited by the same things that amaze her," said O'Rourke adding she went through a similar experience getting used to New Zealand's three channel tel- evision system, watching herds of sheep along the side of every road they travelled and referring to July as being the middle of winter. Witnessing the difference be- tween two people who are alike in many ways with the exception of where they come from, is part of the overall education that comes from travelling half way around the globe. "I'm seeing the world and I'm experiencing a different culture. You can't get that in a classroom," said Fox who admits being away from her parents has allowed her to mature, even though her pangs of homesickness were one of the most difficult parts of the exchange. When she returns to New Zea- land in January she will un- doubtedly return home with a great- er appreciation for her country and a better understanding of Can - place het friend Meaghan- calls home. =ME= MMMEMMM MMfilMIMM MMMMMM MMMMMMM MOM ME MM= MU MMMM■ MMMEM■ MMMM d•U iM■ NUMMI 'MOM (MMM MEMM = MEMO= MEM MMMMMMMMEMMEMMMM iM MMMM MIME MIME MMM MOM WHAM =M■ MEM MEM MMM MIME MUM MR= MMM III IIIMIMIIMIMMMIIIM iMMEMMIMMMMiMMMMMMMM■ MEM MUM= MMMMdd MIME MIME hili = MEd MO MMiiliiii•MMMiiiiifii iiliUM■ MOM MUM MUM= MOM MUM= YiiMMU MM■ =NM= fiiiuMMN■ iiiiEMMM= iiiiMMMM■ MOM MMMMMMM iMMMM■ By Trip Payne ACROSS 1 Paste users 1 Otalgia, more commonly 14 Puts up with 20 Rue the day 21 Genus subcategory 22 Genetic oddity 23 Start of a quip: 2 wds. 24 Devise 25 Stage actress Myrtil 26 Messy areas 27 Recyclable item 28 Give a yank 29 "— — Woman" 30 Even scores 31 'You betcha" 32 Part 2 of the quip: 3 wds. 37 That man's, in Le Mans 38 Provide the provender 40 Mind readers?: abbr. 41 Lamprey 42 '— Dallas" 44 Typos and such 47 Coal box 49 Part 3 of the quip: 5 wds. 55 Lean-to 57 Merit 58 Common — 59 Actress West 60 Lasting mark 61 Uno plus due 63 Pituitary product 65 Gratuity 66 Actress Hagen 67 Hockey great 68 Some execs. 69 Pad 4 of quip 70 Let off steam 71 A Brown 72 Was in first place 73 Fix skirt length 74 Hammer part 75 Retum analysts: abbr. 76 Proclivity 77 Greek cross 78 'Paper Moon" Oscar -winner 80 Licentious sort 82 'Seven" star 83 Pert 5 of the quip: 2 wds. 88 'The Daughter of Time" author 89 Actually existing: 2 wds. 90 Rainbow formers 93 Brit. decoration 95 Smith or Laurel 96 Put on a show 98 Auricle 100 Speaker of the quip: 2 wds. 105 Corrida cry 106 Appointment 107 "... man — — mouse" 108 Square root of Ix 109 'Notorious" star 111 Arrest: 2 wds. 112 Make it big 114 Withhold 117 End of the quip: 2 wds. 118 Gas -station option 119 Where some fish spawn 120 "— Fidelis' 121 Maroon 122 High spirits 123 Directory DOWN 1 Ground grains 2 Southpaws 3 Least appealing 4 New York Indians 5 Foul callers 6 Sault — Marie 7 Bust out 8 Each: 2 wds. 9 Ask for more Time'? 10 Ghana's capital 11 AFL partner 12 "— Ramsey" 13 NY time 14 Love, overseas 15 Move a muscle 16 Suffix for social 17 Latin case 18 Necessitate 19 Wineglass parts 27 She loves me not' kern 28 "My Country, --- P of thee..." 31 Part of Manchuria's border 33 Close uupp 34 Psychological fixation 35 Arizona plant 36 Give on credit 38 Oaf 39 Singer McEntire 43 Pkcher 45 Give a new 46 =odc rollers 47 Waffling containers 48InoOn otent 50 Sandra and 51PPenetrate 52 53 Hidden 54 Minimal amount 55 Horror -movie reaction 56 Nearly broke 60 Winner of the most Grammys 61 My -bitty 62 Loverboy 64 Domingo and Carreras 68 Washing the dishes, e.g. 70 Take a look at 74 On the level? 76 Auction offers 79 Actress Ekberg 81 Ut912es 82 Ballet bend 84 British prep school 85 Decimal bases 86 Ocleber stones 87 Press forward oeFMost illornery up tie Dickens bite 94 Generous sort 95 N.S. course 97 rCopys-machine 99 Bring about 100 'Grapes of Wrath" family 101 Separate Tables" star 102 Triangular sign 103 Utah senator Hatch 104 Inexperienced 106 Men, in slang 110 Guthrie's 111 Start cont rary from scratch 113'Amind -- terrible thing to waste" 114 Probed deeply 115 Card &owner's • 116 Probe deeply 117 Cocktail lounge Mavis Atthill represents Rebekahs at Exeter Fa i r EXETER - Noble Grand Sis. Now it seems it might help di- abetics reduce their risk of heart disease. It's too early to make firm recommendations in this area but early results are exciting. Are you trained In CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)? When some- one's heart and breathing stop, it can take only 4-8 minutes before the victim suffers brain damage and dies. CPR buys precious time by keep- ing blood and oxygen circul ing through the victim's body until they can be resuscitated. It's go training to have and it can save a life. If you suffer from gout, me foods you should avoid include beer, wine, anchovies, organ ats (like liver, heart, kidneys), mussels and herring. These foods high in purines which turn to uric acid in the body and can cause gout pain. We really encourage our customers to learn about any new medication they might receive. Learning about possible side effects and knowing which side effects you should report to your doctor are very important. Check with us if your are unsure. APOTHECARY Ltd.
