Lucan Irish end exhibition season with a win
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish
capped their exhibition sea-
son with a 5-4 win at home
over the visiting Mount Brydg-
es last Wednesday.
Ryan Carroll led the Irish
with two goals, scoring both
in the first period. He was as-
sisted on both occasions by
his set-up man, Andrew Strat-
ten; Chad Greenlee and
Mike Jaremchenko also
picked up assists.
Jeremy Cornish added a
gold and Greenlee also
notched two, scoring the
game winner unassisted at
10:14 in the third period. Pat
Conlin picked up two assists
while Carroll and Darryl Bo -
shad eamed one each.
Head Coach, George Pratt
said he had a lot of midget
players in the lineup against
Mount Brydges, but It was the
midgets that shined as Carroll
and Greenlee combined for
six points in the contest.
"We were happy with the
midget players. They played
very well for us and we plan
an brtnginyg mayp on a
regular basts,obilltiftatt.
With the cUti. being
made over the weekend,
Pratt said although he isn't left
with a physically big team,
they are big in the talent de-
partment.
"We're not overly blessed
'with a lot of size but talent -
wise we are comparable to
any team in the league," he
said.
There will be two new goat -
les minding the net for Lucan
this year as Nathan Maud-
sley, 20, and Matt Fawcett,
16, who stopped 26 shots last
Wedne s, will share the
duties. Mitt said the age dif-
ference'.between his two
goalies will actually comple-
ment each other and he
plans to rotate them equally
for the first part of the season.
The iucan Irish are co -
coached by Bill Boume and
Jason Bukala. Pratt said this
year's coaching staff are op-
timistic as they head into the
regular season and they will
put their final roster to the test
when they take on the North
Middlesex Stars during their
home opener tonight
(Wednesday).
"We have a good mix of
,guys...l think we'll be in every
game 'and hopefully we'll
come out on top," he said.
Fury let playoff spot slip away
The Exeter Fury end a disappointing season with a loss eliminating the
team from playoff contention in the Western Ontario Soccer League
EXETER - The Exeter Fury fin-
ished off a disappointing season
with a solid win in Tillsonhurg Sat-
urday after an ugly 6-1 loss against
Bosnia last week.
Exeter's 5-2 win Saturday was
the result of the Fury keeping the
hall wide and using their speed up
front to create chances.
Pete McAllister with three goals,
led the team in scoring this season
and Bounmy Chansamone notched
two goals himself to help the Fury
to victory.
McAllister showed a nice touch
on the first goal by picking the
short side from a had angle when
the keeper was caught too far off
the post. After a Tillsonhurg goal,
Chansamone replied quickly to
give Exeter a 2-1 lead at halftime.
With the game tied at two, McAl-
lister put the Fury in the lead for
good with a blast from the top of
the eighteen. Chansamone caught
up to a pass from Brian Brand for
the fourth goal and McAllister
completed the hat trick after being
sent in alone on a great iced from
Tom Westerveld.
Tuesday's game at home started
badly for the Fury when Bosnia
took a quick 4-0 lead and. held on
for the 6-1 win. The Fury were un-
able to contain the quick Bosnian
forwards who outraced Exeter's de-
fense for a couple of goals. Exeter
played better after the terrible stars
and managed a goal when Mark
Lynn gave Jason McFalls a beauti-
ful pass from a free kick. McFalls
took the hall along the goal line and
passed it through the crease where
Chuck Walker drove it into the net.
The Fury finished their fourth
season in the Western Ontario Soc-
cer League with a 6-8-4 record.
"it was a disappointing year for
us." said player Jason McFalls.
"We just didn't have someone who
could consistently score goals. That
was our biggest problem...that hurt
us in a lot of games," he said.
Coach Jeff Playfoot agreed.
"The team really missed that.
Every team needs a natural striker
who can score goals." said Play -
foot. "We've always had to work
for our goals and if we got behind
we didn't have the ability to come
hack."
Playfoot said it was a dis-
appointing season. however, he ad-
mits this was a building year for
many of the players who needed
time to get used to each other on
the field.
"With the team we had we should
have challenged for a playoff spot,
but we seemed to let the games we
should have won slip away," he
said.

Centennials ready
to go "all the way"
The Exeter Centennials are on the verge
of making the W.O.S.L. playoffs for the
first time in a decade.
EXETER - The Exeter Centennials senior mens soccer team is on
the brink of making the playoffs for the first time in ten years.
Exeter completed its regular season schedule with a one sided 8-1
win over the Lion Kings from London on Sunday; however, the
team must sit and patiently wait the outcome of the Marconi vs, St.
Cotumban game before they can claim a playoff position.
A Marconi loss or a tie would give Exeter its first playoff berth in
the Western Ontario Soccer League for the first time in a decade.
Four players combined for Exeter's eight goals during the lopsided
game against the Lion Kings. After missing numerous scoring op-
portunities in the first half, Nick Szabo exploded in the second with
three goals for the Centennials. Shawn Rotteau scored a pair as did
Ruud Veldhuizen.
Even goalie George McEwan got in on the goal scoring action
leaving the net to play a striker position during the second half.
With Szabo's trigger foot still burning from his three goals, he
dribbled the ball upfield and sent a short cross pass to McEwan who
was breaking in from the other side of the field. The Exeter netmind-
er picked the ball out of the air and sent it past the sprawling London
keeper notching the Centennial's last goal of the season.
Coach John Rasenberg said if Exeter makes the playoffs, it will be
serious force to be reckoned with in the quest for the division two
championship.
"They can give any team in the league they play a big run," he
said.
Rasenberg is not basing his observations on the outcome of Sun-
day's game (the Lion Kings are ranked near the bottom of the
league), but on the team's overall performance over their last five
matches.
Exeter came back from a two goal deficit against the Nairn Car-
dinals to keep their playoff chances alive and beat the German Ca-
nadians 4-2 last Monday in a pivotal game against a team just two
points ahead of them.
"That was a good indication (of how they can play)...they de-
served every bit of that," added Rasenberg.
McEwan credits the teams.enhanced performance to Rasenberg's
full-time coaching adding the team has not lost since he cane
aboard three quarters through the regular season.
"The team is a lot more relaxed knowing they have somebody on
the sidelines looking out for them," said McEwan.
However, relaxed is not how Szabo feels as he awaits the outcome
of the Marconi vs, St. Columhan game.
"it's tough to sit and wait," he said. "if we make the playoffs i
know we have a chance of going all the way."
Nick Szabo worked his magic for the Centennials on Sun-
day scoring three goals against the London Lion Kings.
