Irish farmers tour Ontario
They visited friends
in the Centralia area,
By Mary Peterson
Centralia correspondent
CtNTRALIA - During the past
week, Mary Peterson and Rob Es-
sery have hosted some friends from
the Republic of Ireland, Mairead
and David French. Mairead first
visited the area in 1993 on an ex-
change between two agricultural or-
ganizations for youth, Macra Na
Merme in Ireland and the Ontario
Junior Farmers Association. In
1994, Mary and Rob enjoyed a
brief visit with Mairead and David
in Ireland.
Mairead and David live on a
dairy farm in the county of Wex-
ford. They arrived in Ontario Sep-
tember 10 and enjoyed an agricul-
tural bus tour with a group of 53
other Irish farmers. Highlights of
this tour included visits to some
outstanding dairy farms, a trip to
Niagara Falls, and spending time in
Ottawa and Montreal. Following
the tour, Mairead and David rented
a car and drove to Centralia.
During their visit with Mary and
Rob, Mairead and David have en-
joyed visiting with many people
and seeing a variety of places. They
caught up with friends in Stratford
and Glencoe, and had an opportuni-
ty to view some of the local sights
both by car and from the air. They
picked one of the sunny days dur-
ing their visit to attend the interna-
tional Plowing Match near Selkirk
in Haldimand-Norfolk for an over-
all picture of Ontario agriculture.
On Saturday, they visited the Exet-
er Fall Fair, and especially enjoyed
the parade.
Mairead and David also attended
the annual convention of Ontario
Flying Farmers which was held in
Chatham at the Wheels Inn. Con-
ference participants included mem-
bers of International Flying Farm-
ers from as far away as Michigan,
South Dakota, and Nebraska. Eve-
ryone offered them a warm wel-
come to this part of the country,
and invited them to the 1997 annu-
al convention' which will be held at
Grand 'Bend.
On ;September 24, Mairead and
David returned to Ireland, knowing
that the next day they would be
backlit work and have little time to
recover from jet lag. They thor-
oughbi enjoyed their visit, and
hope to be able to plan a future va-
catioa to the Centralia area.
