This year the organization was faced with a boom in registration as 450 children took up the sport. SMSA welcomed the extra 111 kids playing soccer this season, but with any minor sports organization, a sudden increase in numbers also brought with it a number of chal- lenges. In order to accommodate the number of teams playing in the West Middlesex Soccer Associa- tion, the London Youth Soccer League, and the Quad County League, EMSA needed to utilize playing fields in Centralia and Us - borne. Finding enough volunteers to help run such a large program was also a challenge, but according to 1996 president Peter Hakvoort, it was a challenge that was eagerly met by the parents and supporters within the community. "Volunteers are extremely im- portant for any minor sport. We had a lot of help from parents and a strong commitment from our coaches and that's what helped Ex- eter Mi:.or Soccer run as smoothly as it did," said Hakvoort. "We have never had the need to push fundraising. We're not out to make a profit. We just want to cov- er our expenses and keep registra- tion fees as low as possible," said Case. In the future, the organization plans to hold coaching clinics with the Ontario Soccer Association, provide more playing fields, pursue a pro -active executive and create an indoor soccer league for those who are interested in playing during the winter season. If EMSA continues to enjoy the growth they have experienced over the last few years, Hakvoort and Case agree it will need an equal commitment, not only from ex- ecutives and coaches, but from the businesses and individuals Within the community that have supported minor soccer throughout the years. "The community will need to be a part of the solution," said Hak- voort. "If the sport continues to grow Exeter and it's surrounding communities will need to grow with it."
