Panthers continue winning
tradition in field hockey
South Huron goes undefeated in Red and Black tournament
EXETER - The South Huron District High School
field hockey team has enjoyed a long winning tradi-
tion over the last six years and it appears that this
season will be no different.
The Panthers began their season on Thursday with
two convincing victories defeating Mitchell 6-0 and
Stratford Central 8-0 before racking up five straight
wins during the Optimist Red and Black Tourna-
ment hosted by South Huron on Friday.
Lori Richardson, Cara Gardner and Shawna Rowe
combined for six goals to lead South Huron in the
shutout win against Mitchell on Thursday, Rialta!d"
son gsiculed the Panthers with three 1,4410114011104
Stratford with teammates Rowe, Gardner, Toni De -
Jong, Jaclyn Baynham and JoDee Regier adding
one goal each.
Coach Jim Workman said the one sided victory
allowed the new players a chance to play and gain
some valuable experience very early in the season.
The Panthers continued to steamroll their way
through five more victories during the Red and
Black tournament on Friday without allowing any
goals against thcm.
They were set to play Monsegnier [sic] Doyle in
the finals but foul weather forced a cancellation of
the game the Panthers seemed destined to win.
On Sunday the team travelled to Waterloo win-
ning three of their five games. They tied one game
but lost in their efforts to advance in a shootout.
"On all occasions the girls co-operated well as a
team and played aggressively," said Workman add-
ing this year's rookies also played well. Newcomers
to the team this season are Laura Skinner, JoDee
Regier, Kim Keller, Shauna Koehler, Tracy. Wilson
and Lindsay Knight: Rookie goaltender.: Sarah
Hodge stood up to the pressure in net and looked at

SAA for three consecutive years and were the de-
fending All -Ontario champions last year, but lost
their title during the OFSAA tournament held in To-
ronto last November when they came up short in a
penalty stroke shootout.
This year's team will be without veterans Carisa
Willis, Kristy Ahrens, Kim Farquhar and Danielle
Miners, however, Workman said he is confident the
returning players and the talented new recruits will
step in to fill the void and put South Huron back on
the road to another Ontario championship.
"The team has already proven to themselves that
they will be competitive and in the hunt for more
hardware," he said.
Hawks dump North Middlesex
HENSALL - With only two ex-
hibition games under their belts, the
Exeter Hawks coaching staff say
it's still to early to scan thinking
about the regular season. but so far
they like what they see.
"We have a lot of good young tal-
ent out there," said assistant coach
Jeff Dalrymple adding they have
about an even number of rookies
and returning veterans skating at
training camp.
After losing their Exhibition
opener to Mitchell the Hawks hand-
ed Parkhill a 9-1 Toss during their
second exhibition game held in
Hensall on Sunday.
Jeff Glavin, a returnee from last
year's All -Ontario Championship
team, and newcomer Chad Gilfillan
combined for five points with Gla-
vin scoring a pair and Gilfillan
notching a goal and two assists.
Also scoring for Exeter were
Chris McDonald, Geoff Mauer,
Chad Dalrymple, Jeff Campbell,
Brody Cochlan and Bill Hodge
who savored an unassisted goal in
the se0o>rd period.
Heid coach and general manager
Dave Revington said he is con-
fident he will have a talented pool
of hockey players representing Ex-
eter after the final cuts and credits
the Exeter Minor Hockey Associa-
tion for that.

"All of the young kids out there
from the minor hockey program
could jump into the lineup at any
time." said Revington.
But with less than two weeks be-
fore the regular season starts they
will have to start trimming the
numbers and Dalrymple suspects
they will have it narrowed down to
about 30 players after the weekend.
The Hawks will hold another try-
out tonight (Wednesday) before
they head into the third exhibition
game against Thamesford on Fri-
day.
"We'll have a better indication of
what our final roster will look like
by the end of the week," he said.

McFalls scores for Fury in
disappointing loss to Delhi
DELHI - Despite playing one of
their best games of the season, the
Exeter Fury dropped a 3-1 decison
to Delhi on Sunday night.
Exeter controlled the play for
most of the game and had many ex-
cellent scoring chances but failed to
score in what has been a year-long
problem for the Fury.
Delhi managed to get the first
goal of the game but Exeter had the
better chances including a wild
scramble started by a shot off the
crossbar that gave the Fury a
couple of shots at an open net, but
were not able to finish the play.
The Fury tied the game in the
second half when Brett Rideout
sent an excellent pass that put Jason
McFalls in the clear. McFalls found
the corner of the net for a 1-1 tie
that was short-lived. The home
team responded quickly with a goal
of its own for a 2-1 lead. A few
minutes later the score became 3-1
when a Delhi player was the first to
a loose ball near the goal line beat-
ing the Exeter defenders.
Exeter gained most of their scor-
ing opportunities by keeping the
ball wide and crossing it- into the
middle. There were a couple of
scrambles in close that the Fury
should have capitalized on, includ-
ing a blast from six feet from Mark
Lynn that hit the goalie in the chest.
Pete McAllister's hard shot just
about got through the keeper who
managed to cover it by the post.
Exeter also hit the post after the
ball was headed slowly towards the
net but no one was there to pick up
the loose ball.
The game got chippy in the late
stages as the Delhi players started
to make rough tackles from behind.
The Fury had enough when keeper
Craig Winbow was kicked in the
leg after he picked the ball up. That
set off .a wrestling match between
the two teams as players piled in
trying to separate others from the
pile. This whole display resulted in
the ejection of one Delhi player but
it was too late in the game for the
Fury to take advantage of the extra
man.
This was the fourth straight year
the Fury have lost in Delhi despite
playing a good game.
Exeter's next game is Sunday at
4 p.m. at the Canner's field.
