"Two-tier medicine" defined
"...politicians insist that two-tier
means an end to guaranteed
health care services for all."
Dear Editor:
"Two-tier medicine" is a meaningless term unless
it is defined.
The first definition:
"There are two tiers of health care, one for the
rich and one for the poor." This is usually linked in
people's minds to the United States type of health
care system. This is also, presumably, the definition
that the Prime Minister of Canada and his health
minister are using.
This second definition of "two-tier medicine" is
preferred by the Ontario Physicians' Alliance:
"A system for providing health care services in
which a high standard of accessible, government
funded health care is available to all Canadians and
also a non-government system for those who wish
to use it."
There must be very few Canadians who wish to
copy the United States health care system in which
there is no guaranteed health care for all.
The present Canadian system which forbids any
private health care for necessary services would be
considered ludicrous in any other democracy. But in
Canada, politicians insist that two-tier tneans an end
to guaranteed health care services for all. It does
not.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. C.J. Wallace,
in conjunction with,
Patrick Hewlett,
Director, Ontario Physicians' Alliance,
700 Bay St., Toronto

Thanks to area businesses
I truly appreciate the contribu-
tions we received...
Dear Editor:
On September 14,15, Community Living -South
Huron was to host a three on three basketball tour-
nament in the streets of Exeter. Unfortunately the
tournament will be cancelled due to lack of entries.
We thank all the teams that showed an interest in
participating and apologize for any inconvenience
this cancellation may have caused.
1 personally would like to thank the business com-
munity for all the support given to this event. The
area businesses that we contacted were very willing
to donate sponsorship and prizes and made organiz-
ing the tournament enjoyable.
With all the requests that were made to area busi-
nesses to support other local events, I truly appre-
ciate the contributions we received. Again, I would
like to say than you to Beyond the Screen Door,
MacLeans Source for Sports, Big V, Gars Bar and
Grill, Eric Campbell Lincoln Mercury, Exeter Golf
Club, Ellison Travel. Sugar and Spice, Seip's valu-
mart, Donut Delite, Murphy's Pub, Hensall District
Co-op, McDonalds, FM 96, and Flanagan's Food
Service.
The one thing I learned from organizing this tour-
nament is that this community has a great spirit.
People right from the start were behind us and never
hesitated when approached for support. The idea of
hosting.the tournament came about as a way to in-
crease awareness of Community Living - South Hu-
ron and to say thanks for supporting our organiza-
tion. We will not stop looking for ways to bring the
community together. If you have any ideas or sug-
gestions and you are in need of help, give us a call.
Sincerely,
Trevor McGregor
Employment Support Worker,
Community Living - South Huron.
The churches and lottery in Ontario
Our hats go off to members of
the Christian Reformed Church,
who do not view the very forebod-
ing tide of events,...
Dear Editor:
There is no need for speculation as to the possibil-
ity of whether or not every household possessing a
VCR will some day be able to gamble from an arm-
chair with the mere push of a button, - the question
of course would seem to be, how soon?
And should the Harris government with its
planned introduction of 20,000 VLTs (Video Lot-
tery Terminals) on racetracks and in charity casinos,
and then bars, restaurants and private clubs, succeed
in its intention, then families everywhere in the
province will, in relatively short order have become
well conditioned to accept the next step, - electronic
home gambling.
Our hats go off to members of the Christian Re-
formed Church, who do not view this very forebod-
ing tide of events, with its obviously dire conse-
quences to the family, social and economic
structures, also its Bible contradictions, as merely
the inevitable, and something to put up with, but in-
deed are confronting the government on the issue of
VLTs with all the vim and fortitude it can muster.
Break and enter
The Hensall Town Hall was brokc into on August 23, 1996 and ap-
proximately 57500.00 of equipment was stolen. The thieves entered
the building and removed a CPU hard drive, two monitors, printer,
ghetto blaster, and the community channel information processor.
Theft of ATV
Some time overnight on August 25-26, 1996 crooks removed an
ATV from property at Concession 6 Osborne Township. The vehicle
was a 1995 Yamaha 4x4, grey and red in color,
VIN#JY44KBNO2SA022I90, plate 332FS.
Theft of electronks
Culprits entered a residence on Concession 21 Stephen Township on
August 21, 1996 and stole electronic equipment. Taken was a Star
Trak 660 satellite receiver, RCA VCR model . VFT 200, and a grey
carpeted speaker "boom box" containing six speakers. The occupants
of the house were gone from 3 to 5 p.m. when the break and enter oc-
curred.
Theft of liquor
Harry's Place on the Main Street of Bayfield was broken into on
August 22, 1996 and a quarldty. of liquor was stolen. Approximately
20 Mottles were stolen including Triple Sec, Grand Manlier, and Bai-
ley's. Some of this bottles hard the bar spouts still attached.

ltemamber, dime doora't pay, Crime Steepen does.
Would that every Christian Church denomination
take a similar stand, and without fear, come out to
uphold what it knows to be right, not tomorrow, but
today, before it could well be too late.
Certain denominations hopefully already have
plans along these lines, but should such not be the
case, clerics should at once implore their higher-ups
to implement comparative action, with the thought
likewise in mind of a church front, united in an ef-
fort to forestall, or Klock as much as possible what
too many accept as the unavoidable.
Within recent decades churches themselves have
admitted to a dwindling influence in the community
as well as among parishioners.
Perhaps this can partially be attributed to a certain
reluctance on the part of the churches to stand up
and be counted; to come forth and be open witness-
es for Christ, singly or as a group, whcn such action
would surely count the most.
If people cannot look to the church for timely and
correct leadership in very important and vital Chris-
tian matters, to whom can they look?
But surely, let it be said that the churches at least
tried; indeed to the full extent of their ability, in the
struggle for the obvious right in this current very
weighty, moral as well as religious issue.
Sincerely,
Harold Wesley
