Minor hockey school prepares players HENSALL - Skating, passing, shooting, stickhandling. Add body checking, power skating and goal- tending to this year's list and it de- scribes 108 young players on the ice at the Hensall Arena last week sharpening their skills in time for the start up of hockey season. According to Exeter Minor Hock- ey President Roger Dougall, the practice gives the kids, aged five to 17, "a little early ice time." The Exeter Minor Hockey School has attracted large numbers since it began in 1992. "We've had about the same num- ber all the way through," said Dou- gall, adding instructors try not to put too many kids on the ice in or- der to offer them better practice. New school instructors included former NHL goaltender Steve McKickan and power skating coach Jeff Loosely. Dave Dalrymple has returned to teach body checking and Dave Partridge is in his third year of instruction, this year fo- cusing on skating, passing, shoot- ing and stickhandling. "They've all done a very good job," said Dougall. "It's a good way for the kids to get some in- struction," as an inexpensive pre- season warm-up. The week began with a con- centration on skating and ended with a draw for hats and an ap- preciation of the school's sponsors. Before the school was formed, Lucan offered the closest similar hockey training in the area. Exciting action at Micro Speedway sports GRAND BEND - It was Perfor- mance Racing News $1,200 Micro Sprint Shootout at the Grand Bend Micro Speedway on August 31, and the action was superb. The Micro Sprint heats saw con- stant dicing as the top point men moved their way to the front. Jeff Campbell (#52-Lou's Bearings) of Lucan, Wade Noble (#33- McRcbert Fuels) of Lucan, and Mike Ling (#61 -Brian's Service Center) of London took heat wins, while the Sunray Cleaners dash for cash saw a dog fight between Jeff Champion (#91 -Grand Bend Fire- place) and Ling, with Champion coming out on top. The B -Feature was won by Mark Hickson (#65 - B&B Auto Supply) of Lucan. The main event was as exciting as any- one could have imagined. Ling and Champion diced through the field, as did Bill Burns (#63 -Hickson Small Engines) of London. Ling was the first of these three to lead, as he took command just before the halfway point with Burns in second and Champion in third. The caution was brought out for the final time with 19 laps to go, and it gave Champion a chance to change a flat tire. Champion then started at the back of the field, and sliced his way throug h traffic, but the battle was out front as Burns made run after run at the leader Ling, even making contact on one occasion, but couldn't get by. On the last corner Burns made one last attempt as Ling went high around a lapped car. As Burns got on the throttle to try to win the chain came off and Burns had to settle for sec- ond. Champion made a valiant ef- fort, but came up a few seconds be- hind in third. Ling said after the race, "Bill and I were pretty even, but I got through lapped traffic a WM Youth Soccer standings As of August 30, 1996 Girls Under 11 W L T Pts. Sean Durand (#76 -Custom Letter- ing & Design) won one heat, and Danny Laemers (#33 -Franklin Ex- cavating) of Port Stanley won the other two heats. Before the feature Laemers looked like he had the car to beat and he didn't disappoint anyone that picked him to win. He got a great jump on the green flag, quickly moved to the front, nego- tiated traffic well, and held Paul Shipway (#28 -Grogan Ford -Texaco Havoline) at bay to win the feature and tighten up the point race. Ship- way held on for second in the cau- tionless race with Steve Purdy (#2- Marshman Engines) of Cambridge, third. September 7 was Micro Kart Sales night at the Grand Bend Mi- cro Speedway, with a full card of Micro Sprint, Gump's Auto Body Jr. Micro Sprints and the Ontario Speedway Mini Sprints. This was the Mini Sprints third trip to Grand Bend's I/6th mile playground of speed, and they've put on a fabu- lous show in their first two trips. correction EXETER - Last week's sports story that ran on page 18 inadver- t ntly.-omitted several area partici- pants in the Ontario Senior Games held recently in Richmond Hill.
