Couple wins bronze at Ontario Senior Games EXETER - After placing second at the Exeter Senior Games and winning gold at the Tri -County Games held at Grand Cove Estates, Marshall and Marion Dearing were pleased with their bronze metal in carpet bowling at the Ontario Sen- ior Games. The provincial games, called Ac- tifest '96, were held August 26 to 28 in Richmond Hill. More than 1,600 sen- iors, 55 -years and old- er, participated in this year's games that orig- inated in Kitchener in 1986. The goal of Actifest is to create en- thusiasm for seniors' participation through three days of friendly competition. "It's not too serious," said Mar- ion. "It's a fun affair and a chance to meet lots of people." Ontario Senior Games events in- clude carpet bowling, contract bridge, cribbage, darts, euchre, 5 - pin bowling, 10 -pin bowling, horse- shoes, lawn bowling, shuffleboard, tennis and walking as well as mens and ladies golf, snooker and swim- ming. The Dearings have been involved with carpet bowling since it was started in Exeter five years ago by Town and Country Homemakers. Carpet bowlers practice their sport at the Lions Centre but hope to have a centre designed es- pecially for local sen- iors. The couple also participate in lawn bowling and Mar- shall is involved in curling as well. They say although com- petition is keen, the real goal of the., senior games is to demonstrate the abilities of seniors in the province. "It's a fun affair and a chance to meet lots of people." Carpet bowling takes more skill and finesse," said Marion who ex- plained the indoor version is You're outta there! limping the bet gime. Both agreed that the Exeter Sen- ior Games, the Tri -County games and travelling to the provincials could not have been accomplished without the dedication of organiz- ers June and Ray Hodgson. "June took so much of the work away from us. She was tre- mendous," said Lynne Farquhar of the South Huron Recreation Centre. Other area seniors who went on to the provincials include: Doreen Oesch and Della Gascho of Zurich in crokinole, Ken Gascho and Ina Neeb of Zurich in crokinole, Mary Fickling, Bob Fickling, Kay Elder, Elaine Weido and Louis Masse of Zurich in 5 -pin bowling, Irene Beck of Lucan in golf, Hal Snoddy of Exeter in golf and snooker, Edna IDeitz and Lorne Archie of, Hensalll in shuffleboard, Audrey Mac- Gregor and Mike Underhill of Ex- eter in swimming, Jean Sheppard, Jean Nisbet and Bert Steinhuis of Grand Cove in 10 -pin bowling and Earl Horner of Zurich in walking. This is something that has been missing from Exeter's skating program," said organizer Julianne Varley, who stresses the program is not designed to take away from existing programs but rather to enhance them. Skaters will learn and improve fundamentals including balance on flats and edges, stopping, cross -overs and turns as well as fast forward and backward starts. Canpowerskate is the only nationally regulated powerskating program in Canada developed through the Canadian Figure Skating Association. It is not a learn -to -skate program and enrolled skaters should have basic for- ward and backward skating skills as well the ability to stop. The program will' provide an opportunity for skaters to develop power skating skills throughout a 10 to 12 -week program. Participants should wear full hockey or ringette equipment. The program is divided into three progressive levels and participants are grouped according to age, ability and body size. The rigorous 45 minute classes will include stationary and slow moving warm-up, a skill review, new skill instruction and practice, conditioning and power skating drills and a cool -down. Badges will be awarded based on achievement and each of the three lev- els will test a combination of skill and speed. Registration will be held on September 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sep- tember 14 from 10 to 12 p.m. Kathy Merner will instruct the classes to be held Mondays and Thursdays from 4 to 4 :45 p.m. For more information, contact Julianne Varley at 235-0243 or 235-0800. 1 August 28 Grand Bend 3 at Exeter Bees 0 Goaltenders: Nicole Muller, Vanessa Steuer Exeter 'Hornets August 28 Exeter 6 at Strathroy Rockets 0 Goals: Lisa Hakvoort (3), Frances Va- nOss, Anne Gregus, Jamie Darling Assists: Sarah Neevel, Brieanna Har- burn, Jasmine Kerslake.
