In fact, he's one of the best as- phalt sled racers in the country. Haugh is currently the Thunder Series points leader at Motorplex and is well ahead of the pack with approximately 10 points separating him from the second place contend- er. He is also only one point behind the leader in national competition and is poised to take the lead in the national points series next weekend when he races at Grand Bend Mo- torplex Saturday. Asphalt sled racing is a new event, only recently recognized by the National Hotrod Racing As- sociation (NHRA), but its popular- ity is growing rapidly in Ontario. The vehicles used are stock or modified snowmobiles converted to run on a quarter mile asphalt track. Haugh races a 1995 ZRT Arctic cat sponsored by Becker Power and Leisure and Smith Pete Roof- ing in Exeter. His best time on the machine is 10.83 seconds at 119 m.p.h. Starting off with a handful of new racers last summer, there aro now 31 asphalt sleds running at Motorplex and the tinny high- pitched sound coming from the two-stroke engines is now a com- mon sound in the pit area. The sudden popularity of asphalt sled racing doesn't surprise Haugh who said the machines put drag rac- ing within the grasp of anyone with a snowmobile. The cost of converting a snow- mobile for racing on asphalt is ap- proximately 51,000, a small price compared with the thousands of dollars it costs to race and maintain a super pro dragster. "It's a lot cheaper than racing cars and motorcycles and you get another 10 months use out of your snowmobile," said Haugh. Converting a snowmobile actual- ly makes it a year-round vehicle and many recreational snowmobil- ers are starting to realize they don't have to put away their sleds once the show melts. "There seems to be more and more racers out every weekend," he added. On that particular weekend, Haugh had the opportunity to race with his father Terry and his sister Teresa. Normally, they both race cars at Motorplex. Teresa drives an 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass called Cut N' Loose and Terry drives a 1980 Malibu called the Krazy Kus- todian. They are co -driving Teresa's car in the Thunder Series race and are among the top 10 chosen to repre- sent Motorplex at the Indianapolis Bracket Series finals later this month. However, they were racing as- phalt sleds last Saturday after friends asked them to be substitute drivers for the.day so they could at- tend a wedding. In point series racing drivers lose points if they don't show for a weekend race, but they can have another driver race in their place. Drag racers at heart, Teresa and Terry jumped at the opportunity to Haughs on sleds. Chris Haugh, left, poses with sister Teresa and father Terry in the pit area of Grand Bend Motorplex recently. The three had the opportunity to race together after friends asked Teresa and Terry to race as substitute drivers pitting them against Chris who is the Asphalt Sled Thunder Series points race leader at Motorplex. Chris Haugh of Exeter takes off from the starting line dur- ing a time -trial at Grand Bend Motorplex recently. Asphalt sleds are snowmobiles converted to race on NHRA sanc- tioned tracks. gxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxzxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxii ►1 ►4 ►1 N VT1 C. • U • B for all regular programs and new CANPOWER Wed., September 11 7-9 p.m. Sat., September 14 10 a.m. - 12 noon at South Huron Recreation Centre Foyer Exeter Figure Skating REGISTRATION Attention Ringette and Hockey Players N CANPOWER -10 hour program ►1 For more information call Cathy Hakvoort 235-3228 ►` x1ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZxUXXXIXXXXZZZZZZZZZZZZt! 0 Clinton Radars Senior 'A' Hockey Club Invites You to Come to our Training Camp on the following Dates September 6, 1996 nt 8:00 p.m., at Seaforth Arena September 11, 1996 at 9:00 p.m., at Seaforth Arena September 17, 1996 at 9:30 p.m., at Clinton Arena September 19, 199G at 9:30 p.m., at Clinton Arena September 24, 1996 nt 9:30 p.m., at Clinton Arena September 26, 1996 at 9:30 p.m., at Clinton Arena ayers are require to suPp y their own equipment and sticks for training camp. With only four more weekends left in the asphalt racing season, Haugh feels confident he has the points race at Grand Bend all wrapped up and will be ready to claim his title at the season cham- pionships on October 5. The na- tional series, however, will be an- other story as a stubborn racer from Kitchener is giving Haugh a run for his money. With little prize money up for grabs, it's the love of racing sleds that compels Haugh to com- mit every weekend of his summet to the track. But as the new kid on the racing block, asphalt racers of today will be considered the pioneers of the sport in years to come and Haugh admits he likes the idea of be- coming one of the first Canadian asphalt sled racing champions.
