Medals were awarded for the first time and the theme, this year focused on the Olympics. For the under 10 -year-old category, Erin Tordoff won a gold medal for reading 155 books, Merissa Thompson won silver for 50 books, JaneIle Martin achieved bronze for reading 35 books and Stacey Pfaff won bronze for 30 books. For the above 10 -years - old category, Courtney Smith won a gold medal for reading 150 books and Amanda Thom- son won silver for 130 books. Congregations donate to food bank Zion West and Cen- tralia congregations are giving to the Exeter Food Bank. By Mary Peterson Centralia correspondent CENTRALIA - On Sunday, Sep- tember 1, a combined worship ser- vice was held for Centralia and Zion West United Churches in Cen- tralia. Since this was the first Sun- day of the month, donations were received for the Exeter Food Bank. Anyone who forgot to bring dona- tions is welcome to do so at the next worship service. Zion West and Centralia United Churches will resume regular wor- ship on Sunday, September 8 at 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respec- tively. Pastor Heather Smith will be back to lead the worspip. Sep- tember is back -to -school rttonth for her too, as she begins classes on September 9. Several meetings will be held in September. On September 5, Cen- tralia U.C.W. will meet at 8:00 p.m. Mernbers of the Session will meet September 26 at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Official Board meeting at 8:00 p.m. Zion West United Church Anni- versary will be celebrated on Sun- day, September 22. The guest preacher will be Kevin Stewart. There will be no worship service at Centralia on this day. In Crediton recently at the euchre games, Low Hand winners were Alwina Galloway and George Ad- ams. Bernice Squires and Walter Weber were High Hand winners, while Lone Hand winners were Marian Noels and Ruby Beaver. Legion planning family dinner The dinner will kick off Legion Week. By Liz Sangster Hensall correspondent HENSALL - August 21, Hensall Legion hosted the zone Member- ship/Leadership and Planning Sem- inar with. most of the Branches rep- resented. Beginning Legion Week Hensall Legion is hosting a family style dinner on September 15 at 5 p.m. Tickets for adults are 58.50, chil- dren under 12 54.50. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are available from Legion members or phone 262-2722 or 262-2948. The regular meeting for Legion members for the fall season will be September 11 at 8 p.m. Legion week - September 15-22 EXETER - Everyone is welcome to take part in these activities and they are free other than the supper and Sentimental Journey. Look for the Legion Child Video Program coming to the schools this fall. A1I children in Kindergarten, Grades 4 & 8 will be taped (upon parents permission) and these tapes will remain with the Boards of Education. This pro- gram has been going on for 11 years. A The Hensall and District Horti- cultural Society will meet Septem- ber 9. The guest speaker for the evening will he Susan Nanderer of Susan's Greenhouses in Crediton. Bob Heywood will be guest speaker at Hensall United Church on September 8. Hensall residents arc reminded that all garbage rnust be tagged for pickup.
