Highway Help Program launches new program
Signs alert motorists to call police when help is needed
By Heather Mir
T -A Reporter
EXETER - With more people
taking to the highways, the
Ontario Association of Chiefs of
Police has created a new Highway
Help Program devised to aid
stranded motorists.
Although many people now
own cellular Help signs provide
phones, not all
regions of Ontario an affordable back -
have cellular up for unexpected
service. Help situations and act as
signs provide an a deterrant to

criminals who expect police are
on their way.
The program educates drivers
on proper procedures for receiving
and offering assistance when
motorists become stranded. The
program also makes use of a new,
highly visible, hook -on "CALL
POLICE" distress sign that is
made of highly visible reflective
plastic. When hooked onto the
driver's window, it protrudes out
from the car where it is visible to
passing drivers in both directions.
"Most of the calls we get of
people stranded are from truck
drivers," explained OPP
Community Services Officer John
Marthalt. "T titrtIrivers Skit
easily spot the "CALL POLICE"
sign on the opposite side of the road
when its in the side window."
The program was recently
launched during Police Week and to
date police say the response has
been excellent. Highway Help is a
province -wide program that
provides a consistent method to
follow and does not endanger the
safety of drivers or
stranded motorists.
Police encourage
the use of the signs if
motorists become
stranded on a highway
or anywhere they don't
feel comfortable.
"Definately do not
put up your hood,"
warns Marshall. "That restricts the
view around your vehicle."
Passing drivers are advised not
to stop but to note the location of
the stranded vehicle and contact
local police. Local police can be
contacted by calling *OPP (star
677) or *MTP (star 687) in the
Toronto area. These numbers can
be pre -programed into phones.
Signs are available for $3.99 at
CAA Outlets, Zehrs Food Markets,
Zellers and participating Canadian
Tire Stores. For more information

Roth at (519)696-3808 or visit the
program web site at
