Imperials
facing end
EXETER - The Exeter Imperials
lost the opening game of their dou-
ble round robin playoff to Atwood
5-1 in Exeter last Tuesday night.
Since their quarter final victory
over Aberfoyle by a score of 12-8,
Exeter has been outscored 9-2 in
three games, including OASA com-
petition. During this period, they
have managed only seven hits.
Against Atwood, after falling be-
hind 1-0 in the top of the first, an
RBI single by starting pitcher Steve
Cook tied the score in the bottom
of the first.
The only other Exeter baserun-
ners were Cook with a fourth in-
ning walk and Chris Kennedy and
Greg Dalrymple with base hits.
Cook took the loss as he worked
three and one-third innings, giving
up four runs on five hits. Sean Pel -
low worked three and two-thirds in-
nings, giving up only one run.
The Imperials, who now have to
win their last three games to be as-
sured of the 'B' championship,
played in Atwood Monday night,
hosted Moorefield last night and
travel to Moorefield Thursday night
for their final game of the round
robin and the season.

Exeter Elite make it through
first_ year as new fastball team
EXETER - The Exeter Elite Fast -
ball team completed their regular
league schedule on Friday with a
23-11 win over the Ojibway Ath-
letics on Friday.
Led by Cindy Crich who went
four for four at bat with two walks
a triple and a home run, and Jody
Horton who went three for four
with two walks and a triple, the
Elites scored 10 runs in the third in-
ning and nine more runs in the
sixth in their best offensive effort
of the season.
Bonnie Hartwick pitched for four
1/3 innings for the win. She was re-
lieved by Jane Rowe who struck
out three batters for the save.
The Exeter Elites finished their
season with an unsuccessful 8-17
win/loss record, however, the fact
that Exeter even has a womens fast -
ball team is a success story within
itself.
Ever since the Exeter Greys fold-
ed a few years ago fastball in Exet-
er ceased to exist as women turned
to slow -pitch as an alternative.
Sherri Pym, was playing for St
Marys last season when she de-
cided to form a fastball team based
in Exeter.
"I wanted to keep fastbali alive,"
said Pym who recruited local wom-
en for the team. The response was
Rebels defeat
Coldstream
EXETER - Exeter Rebels (Girls
under 17) soccer team played host
to Coldstream Cougars last Tues-
day.
Exeter started the game very
strong with great ball control and
some excellent scoring opportuni-
ties. Exeter scored their first goal of
the game only about 15 minutes
into the game. Jaclyn Vanesbroeck
crossed the ball in front of the net
and the rebound came directly out
to Sarah Wuerth who headed the
ball into the net.
About five minutes into the sec-
ond half, Jaclyn Vanesbroeck
scored on a break away blasting a
shot past the Coldstream goalie giv-
ing Exeter the 2-0 lead.
Coldstream came back scoring
two really quick goals to tie the
game. With only a few minutes left
in the game Julie Darling crossed
the ball in front of the net and Ja-
clyn Vanesbroeck deflected it into
the corner of the net giving Exeter
the 3-2 victory.
Exeter has lost only three games
and is only two points behind first
place Coldstream after giving chert
their second loss of the season.
greater than she anticipated and had
more than enough interest to fill a
roster of 17 players. Having wit-
nessed what a lack of commitment
can do for a team, Pyme con-
centrated on recruiting players, not
just for their skills, but for their
dedication to the sport and to the
team.
Pym believes there are many
women who are not satisfied with
the level of competition soft -ball
offers and that fastball appeals to
those with a competitive nature.
Head coach Tim Moore said the
team had a rough inaugural year
playing in the Tri -County Womens
League, but that was to be ex-
pected.
"It's a premiere league with a lot
of good teams...it's very com-
petitive fastball," said Moore.
He said the team will have to
overcome the mental errors that
have plagued them throughout the
season, but they show promise in
the hitting department and they're a
smart base running team.
Pym realizes this was a building
year for the Exeter Elites and they
still have a long way to go but she
feels their may be enough interest
to create another Exeter team next
season. Now that the Exeter Elites
are firmly established, the next step
will be putting a few more notches
in the win column.
"We just need more time to learn
how to play like a team and we'll
have a better go at it next season,"
said Pym.
The win on Friday was a much
deserved boost for the Elites who
will compete in their final wrap-up
double tournament in London on
Friday.
Elite and at bat, Sherri Pym gets ready for the pitch dur-
ing the Exeter Elite fastball game against Ojibway on Fri-
day night. Exeter finished their regular season with a 23-
11 win.

GRAND BEND - WhSe OR In
midst of a very successful
gural year the Grand Bend
cro Speedway Is planning an
expansion for the 1997 season.
Currently the regular program
consists of Micro Sprints and Jr.
Micro Sprints, but there is a big
step up from the 6.5 hp Honda
GX-200 to the 440 cc. 65+ hp
snowmobile motors.
Track owners sold that a 9 hp
class will present Itself for the
1997 campaign, and will run un-
der the banner of Mini -Sprints.
There are many reasons behind
what should be a very success-
ful class.
"People had shown Interest in
something like this all year," said
track co-owner Steve Champi-
on. "And atter having the Onta-
rio Minl-Sprints up for a show we
decided that it was the right
road to take. They put on an ab-
solutely terrific program. Of the
nine cars, seven finished on the
lead lap In the 40 lap feature.
With no cauttonsi"
After noticing that the speed-
way seemed to need a third
class to keep Ws racing pro-
grams runningsr!p9thr the
promoter and trackbd-orihru Ai
Champion said "This could be
used as a step for kids 15 years
old and up who have either lust
finished their time In a Jr. Micro
Sprint, and might not be able to
handle a Micro Sprint, or a
youngster who wants to start
racing but is too old for a Jun-
ior."
Steve Champion also added,
"We appreciateof
Rob Good and the Mint -
Sprint's. They are in total support'
of the program, and t think we
wilt work together a lot in the fu-
ture."
Kart Sales have already
rrad a driver for their factory
sponsored team. Darcy Melon -
nen, of Lambeth, will pilot the
car in the MU -Spring division.
