That hasn't changed and neither have the beans. But Due to demand, this year there will be more beans. The same recipe of ketchup, tomato juice, bacon, secret spic- es and white beans has re- mained constant, but more beans will be cooked this year to keep up with the demand since organizers nearly ran out last year. Volunteers began cooking on Sunday - seven days prior to the festival - to prepare 3,000 lbs of the finished product that will be consumed in one day. According to Bean Festival President Jody Durand, the in- tegrity of the beans throughout the 31 years has never been compromised because the cook- ing staff won't allow it. "They're very picky about how things are done. The qual- ity is always there. It has to be or else the people who come back year after year will no- tice," said Durand. Along with the beans the number of complementary events have also increased. As well as the non-stop entertain- ment of magicians, musicians and clowns, additional rides I have been added to the midway and the Bean Meet '96 antique car show is expected to surpass last year's registration drawing 800 vehicles. A new event added to the schedule this year is the C.G. Farm Supply Backhoe Chal- lenge. For $2, participants can attempt to scop a basketball off a pilon with the hoe and drop it into a barrel within one minute. Prizes are available and proceeds will go towards the Zurich Minor Athletic Associa- tion. With attendance er(ceeding 15,000 people, Durand said it takes the combined effort of dozens of volunteers to pull off a festival of this size. But year after year there has never been of shortage of willing bean fest participants. `The whole town of Zurich comes out to help. That's the kind of effort it takes to make this happen." Melissa Jeffrey, 7, needed a stool to reach the trays, but she soon became a bean stirring expert. Many local children had fun helping with the bean cooking process. About 12 volun- I Leers will work three hours a n t for five nights to reach bean quota. It is with great pleasure that 1 extend to all visitors and area residents, my kindest regards and congratulations on the 31st Zurich Bean Festival May this milestone be a celebration of your efforts, heritage and tradition CPoul deckle MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT HURON -BRUCE 1-800-466-1726 30 Victoria St. North Goderich, ON.
