The top finishing teams from the north and the south leagues Cota- bined to make this eight team tour- nament with Exeter completing their league play in a strong third position. In the first game against Walker- ton, Exeter had no trouble over- powering their pitching with 15 hits, outscoring them 21-0 with Ja- son Finkbeiner recording 10 RBI's. League leading Listowel pro- vided more competition in the sec- ond game wt*n they put together titan quick hits in the first toning to takes five run lead. Exeter rallied in the second in- ning with a lead off hit from Scott Skinner, a couple of walks and then back-to-back doubles by Jeff Campbell and Mike Seip. This put Exeter back in the game and down by only one run. Although Exeter displayed some strong pitching from Jason Grenier, Jay Funston and Nick Regier, the Listowel batters came through. Der spite a solid effort Exeter fell short loosing 13-8. In the next game against Mitch- ell, Exeter started out strong with Exeter Express win W.O.B.A. championship OWEN SOUND - The Exeter Express claimed the Western On- tario Baseball Association "D" Championship after beating Port El- gin 7-1 on Saturday. The win gives them a berth in the Ontario Baseball Association championships held in Tillsonburg on the Labor Day weekend. Exeter took the second and final game in Owen Sound after win- ning their playoff opener over Port Elgin 8-6 at home on July 28. Scot Russell took control on the mound scattering five hits, walk- ing one batter and striking out three. Exeter scored on hits from Bill Glover, Rick Boon, Rick Schilbe, Dan Dowling, Ron Elliot, Paul Smith, Darcy Martin and Dave Rus- sell who hit an home run in the fifth inning. Co -coach Doug Fairbairn credited the victory to a positive attitude on the bench and an overall team effort. "If we play like the way we played on Saturday we can beat any- body," said Fairbairn. The Express began their league playoffs on Tuesday night against Strathroy, however, results were not known at press time. Wheelchair athlete receives town plaque EXETER - Exeter's Josh Watson appeared at council last Tuesday to receive a town plaque for his suc- cess at OFSAA during the spring. Josh won a gold medal in the all - Ontario secondary school athletic competitions by coming first in the 1,500 metre wheelchair race. The meet was held this year in Kitchen- er. Mayor Ben Hoogenboom, in pre- senting the town's symbol of recog- nition, acknowledged that Josh is an inspiration to others and in win- ning the gold proved that rigorous training and years of dedication can pay dividends.
