Imperials edge Aberfoyle
in quarter -final series
EXETER - After falling behind
8-1, the Exeter Imperials rallied
with five runs in the fourth, four
runs in the fifth and four runs in the
sixth inning last Tuesday night to
edge Aberfoyle 12-8 and win their
best of three quarter final series two
games to one.
Chris Kennedy led the Exeter
comeback with a double, single and
two walks and scored four runs.
Greg Rutledge also singled twice
and scored two runs. Glenn Hines
singled and doubled and had 2
RBI's and also scored two runs in
Exeter's biggest offensive output of
the year.
Kevin Gooder, in relief of Steve
Cook, picked up the win. The Im-
perials now go on to play Atwood
and Moorefield in a double round
robin to decide the Ontario Junior
Men's Fastball League "B" Divi-
sion championship. They hosted
Atwood last night with the results
not known at press time.
Imperials lose twice in pro-
vincials
Exeter Imperials Junior Men's
Fasiball Club travelled to Merlin on
the weekend to participate in the
O.A.S.A. Junior "C" Champion-
ships and failed to win a game.
On Friday night, an unearned run
in the bottom of the first inning
proved to be the difference as Exet-
er lost to Hickson 1-0. Exeter's best
chance to score carne in the seventh
inning, with two out Exeter starting
pitcher Steve Cook singled. Greg
Rutledge then hit a high fly ball to
short right field which was dropped
by the second basemen and pinch
runner, Kevin Gooder, was thrown
out at the plate as he attempted to
score from first base. Cook went
the distance for the Imperials and
allowed four hits while striking out
16 and walking five. His hit was
the only one allowed by the tough
Hickson pitcher.
On Saturday, their hitting woes
continued as they were edged by
Shakespeare 3-1. Two runs in the
fourth and one in the fifth off Exet-
er starter, Kevin Gooder, proved to
be the difference. Once again, Exet-
er's best chance to win came in the
seventh inning as Chris Kennedy
led off with a triple and scored on a
Greg Dalrymple single. Pinch hitter
Steve Cook then reached on a error
leaving to men on with no one out.
However, the next three men struck
out ending the tournament for the
Imperials.
Exeter Women's soccer
team lose to St. Thomas
EXETER - The Exeter women's soccer team host-
ed St. Thomas on Sunday losing a hard-fought
game 3-1.
St. Thomas scored very early in the game on a
penalty shot and the early deficit seemed to take the
steam out of their legs as Exeter continued to play a
very slow game allowing St. Thomas to reach the
ball first putting themselves at the wrong end of a
series of goal scoring opportunities.
Exeter goalie, Jana Webster played an outstanding
game saving several breakaway opportunities by the
visiting team. With only 10 minutes left in the first
half, St. Thomas scored another goal on a br
away by one of their forwards giving thew!
lead. 's,'r„ .t??=
Exeter came out in the second half playing very
strong and aggressively, putting on a different game
than the first half. Julia Merner had a couple of
great scoring chances both of which went high of
the net.
With five minutes left in the game, Exeter finally
scored on a free kick from Rosie Flanagan, who
chipped the ball over a wall of defenders allowing
Exeter forward Cindy Moore to beat them to the
ball and put a shot past the St. Thomas goalkeeper
making the final score 3-1.
On Friday, Exeter downed the SouthEnd snipers
in London 1-0.
Exeter took the lead mid -way through the first pe-
riod when an accurate shot by Julia Merner beat the
goal keeper for the go ahead goal.
London pressed hard but Moore, playing in net,
turned away all London advances.
Early in the second half Kristin Strang carried the
ball down the sideline, and buried the ball into the
top corner of the net giving Exeter the 2-0 lead.

for their O.B.A. playoffs in Walsingham
STRATHROY - The Exeter Co-

Thomdale and Byron but lost to
Strathroy and Clinton over the

Darryl Hartman picked up the
win on the mound in Exeter's 13-3

ing out six Thomdale

the key to this game
with Dennis McCann
leading with a double and
a single. Darryl Hartman
and Dale•Hopf had two singles
each.

during Exeter's 8-6 win over Byron
in the second game.

gles. Dan Van Stratten, Chad Ram-
er, Mark Glavin and Darryl Hart-
man recorded base hits in this
come -from behind victory.
The 11-3 loss to Strathroy in
game three was the team's worst ef-
fort of the season according to
coach Gary Hartman.
"They were totally unprepared
and un -rested for this important
game," said Hartman.
Strathroy took full advantage by
scoring five runs in their first time
up at bat.
Dan Stratten, Dennis McCann
and Ben McCann shared pitching
duties. Jo Maskell hit a
triple, with singles by
Chad Ramer, Blake
Schade, Scot kemp,
Darryl Hartman and
Dale Hopf.
The close 5-4 loss
to Clinton in their last
game was a much bet-
ter effort with Dwight
Gingerich pitching the first
three innings, striking out three
Clinton batters, walking three and
giving up four hits.
Shawn Gillespie pitched the last
four innings striking out six batters,
walking one and allowing only
three scattered hits.
Chad Ramer hit two singles and
base hits were recorded by Dan
Van Stratten, Ben McCann, Dale
Hopf, Scot Kemp and Darryl Hart-
man.
Exeter's defense kept their errors
down to three in this game but Ex-
eter could not get the timely hits
stranding a total of nine base -
runners.
The Co-op Juniors will practice
Thursday evening to prepare for
their O.B.A. playoffs in Walsing-
ham on Saturday where they will
try to win an All -Ontario cham-
