August 6, 1986 - Dr. Maurice Cook, national president-elect of the
Soil Conservation Society of America was the keynote speaker at
Wednesday's 40th anniversary celebration of the Ausable-Bayfield
Conservation Authority.
Connie Desjardine, daughter of Eleanor and Cecil Desjardine of
Grand Bend was crowned 1986 Dashwood Friedsburg Days Queen
Friday night.
Stanley Township's Sesquicentennial celebrations ended this past
weekend with Homecoming Weekend. The theme for Sesquicen-
tennial was "Meet and Mix in '86".
25 YEARS AGO
August 5, 1971 - Due to the ever increasing number of thefts from
motor vehicles, the Grand Bend detachment of the Ontario Provin-
cial Police again reminds motorists to lock their cars when leaving
them unattended.
With perfect co-operation from the weatherman, the largest
crowd in the 27 -year history of the Kirkton Garden Party turned out
to witness a top notch show of amateur and professional talent.
Hurondale Women's Institute members made up the studio audi-
ence for the taping of the CFPL TV program "Act Fast" recently.
The group raised $110 to be used to sponsor 4-H clubs and entertain
seniors.
35 YEARS AGO
August 5, 1961 - H.G. "Hal" Hooke, retiring field officer of the
Ausable Conservation Authority was honored at a picnic arranged
by the public relations advisory board. Mr. Hooke was the first per-
manent field officer for the authority and came to the area in 1955.
He is being succeeded by Terry McCauley.
Despite the rainy weather of the past two weeks, good crowds
have been attending the Sunday evening gospel services at the Star -
lite Drive-in Theatre at Shipka.
The new district fire truck, the first to be purchased on a co-
operative basis was christened Thursday night during a reception in
Exeter attended by officials from Usborne, Stephen and Hay town-
ships, as well as from Exeter.
40 YEARS AGO
August 6, 1956 - Three prints submitted by Exeter photographer
Jack Doerr have received awards of merit in a continent -wide photo-
graphic show in Chicago this week.
Pollution in the Ausable River, west of Exeter is killing thousands
of fish according to deputy game warden Jack Green. They started
dying Sunday and by Monday night there were hundreds floating
down the river.
SO YEARS AGO
August 4, 1946 - The winners of the field crop competitions were
announced as follows: Oats, Oscar Tuckey, Earl Shapton and Harry
Beaver; Barley, William Elliott, George Link and Harry Strang.
Dr. Hobbs Taylor, MLA for South Huron officially opened the
new Exeter Turf Club track, Wednesday. Nearly 3,000 spectators
were on hand to see the first horse meet in Exeter since 1941.
Only 10 percent of the 187 wells in Hensall that were tested were
graded as Class A, it was reported by the Department of Health.
Eighteen wells were listed as Class A, while 69 percent were tested
as Class D.
75 YEARS AGO
August 5, 1921 - A big shipment of cattle is to be taken from this
district commencing Wednesday of this week. Some 1,459 head of
the finest export cattle in the country are being sent to England and
Scotland on four different boats. The men going are Wes Snell,
W.T. Colwill, Ulric Snell, Harper Rivers, Jos. Amy and John Mor-
gan.
100 YEARS AGO
August 6, 1896 - About noon on Wednesday last, a large barn
containing most of the season's crops belonging to Thomas Harlton
on Concession 17 of Stephen Township was struck by lightning.
Soon the building was enveloped in flames and completely burned.
The latest arrival at the Campgrounds in Grand Bend was a party
of twelve boys from St. Marys. They are now settled in what is
known as the Crows Nest Camp.
Johnston Eros. are rebuilding their woolen mill in Zurich, recently
destroyed by fire. It will be equipped with up-to-date machinery and
facilities for better meeting the demands of their increasing trade.
They are energetic citizens and deserve prosperity.
The Crediton baseball team came up to Zurich on Saturday with
fire in their eyes, but the rain took compassion upon the visitors in
preventing the match.

Huron Hospital on Friday. The money was raised during a recent fundraising barbecue.'

it has reached its first milestone of
one thousand memberships in Lon-
don and the five -county region of
Huron, Oxford, Middlesex, Elgin
and Perth. HOMEtown's vision is
to "develop and provide universal
and affordable access to a compre-
hensive communications and infor-
mation service." HOMEtown has
grown significantly since its crea-
tion a year and a half ago, from
text -only Internet access to full
graphics capabilities, and from
three phone lines to more than for-
ty.
HOMEtown was founded by a
group of rural librarians who were
interested in establishing Internet
access in remote areas in South-
western Ontario. Thanks to the df -
forts of countless volunteers and
the support of other community
partners, many urban and rural are-
as now have Internet access with-
out having to pay Tong -distance
rates to be online.
