You are better safe than sorry TORONTO - Now that summer has at last arrived, many students and young people either will have already started their summer johs or will be looking for work. Unfortunately, before the sum- mer is over, .tragedy will have struck many of them through work injuries. Every year over 18,000 young workers in Ontario are injured and some are killed in workplace acci- dents. What is not realized until it is too late is that these accidents could have been prevented. Worker and employer awareness of workplace hazards and how to deal with them are crucial to safe working conditions. That is why, in the early spring of 1996, Labor Minister Elizabeth Witmer an-' nounced a grant of $415,000 to be divided equally between the Indus- trial Accident Prevention Associa- tion (IAPA) and the Workers' Health and Safety Centre to create the Young Workers' Awareness Program, which gives students the information they need to protect their health and safety on the job. There are two components to the program: ,a general assemhly pres- entation and a classroom instruc- tion segment. Trained instructors are available to conduct presenta- tions at all Ontario high schools. Both the general assembly and the classroom segments stress student interaction. Using video and other materials, trained'instructors wili'cdiri>.'ty any Ontario high school to deliver the crucial message. Students receive a resource book and other informa- tion . But students don't have to wait until schools open again in the fall to learn how to protect themselves Aborted take off leaves two injured GRAND BEND - Two people were injured when a small plane went down shortly after takeoff from the Grand Bend Airport on Saturday. The Cessna 206, owned and operated by Grand Bend Sport Par- achuting Center Inc., was taking six skydivers up for a jump but the take off was unsuccessful and the plane descended into a nearby cornfield at the end of the runway around 4:15 p.m. The pilot, Anne Tilker from Palmerston, and one other passenger were injured in the crash. Both persons were transported to the South Huron District Hospital where they were treated and released. Bob Wright, owner of the parachute center, said the cause of the crash is not yet known. "We haven't had a chance to analyze the situation yet. All we've been able to do is get the airplane out of the cornfield. Wright added that this was the most serious incident at the par- achute centre in its 14 year history. "If you have a lot of planes going up and a lot of (skydivers) jump- ing there is going to be an occasional incident, but we've never had anything this serious. This is new for us," he said. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Ontario Pro- vincial Police are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
