Beach water quality hotline available in Huron County CLINTON - The Huron County Health Unit established a 24 hour hotline last Friday to inform people about high E. coli bacteria in beach waters. The "Beach Water Quality Hot- line" is intended to provide a list of public access beaches that have been posted with signs indicating temporary pollution with elevated levels of of E. coli bacteria. Res- idents can find out which beaches have been posted by calling 482- 3416 and ask fc- the hotline num- ber or press star *501 (star -5-0-1) on a touch phone dial pad. Klaus Seeger, health inspector for the Huron County Health Unit said the number is available 24" hours a day, seven days a week and will be useful to beach goers who want up to date information on postings. "Many times people head up to' their cottage and wonder 'what's the beach like'?" Now they can call to find out even when nobody is here to take their call," said Seeger. any:..- .::: y.,r Comrng events SOLO TOURNAMENT, Saturday. August 3, 1996, Seaforth Legion. Everyone welcome! 30.31,32c It will also include the date of the last rainfall. Seeger said that in- formation is useful because there is a strong correlation between high bacteria counts and heavy rains. Extensive wave action, can also raise E. coli levels which could re- main high for up to three days. In such a situation, the health unit would post a sign stating: Warn- ing...Following rainstorms, the wa- ter at this beach may be temporari- ly polluted for up to three days. Bathers are advised to take suitable precautions if choosing to swim. (Don't submerge and don't drink the water). Seeger said they test continu- ously and if bacteria levels do not go down they post another sign stating: Warning...Bathing Haz- ardous, polluted waters. Swim or bathe at your own risk. "If this sign is up we're definitely advising swimmers not to go in," he said. E coli bacteria are generally found in an- imal and human wastes and are an indicator of water quality in rec- reational bathing areas. In rural areas, agricultural runoff and faulty septic systems are two of the main culprits responsible for polluting beach water with fecal matter. Untreated or partially treat- ed sewage from municipal treat- ment plants can also end up in nat- ural waters during periods of heavy rains when the plant's capacity is exceeded. Health risks from swimming in contaminated waters range from stomach aches, diarrhea and vom- iting, to infections of the skin, ears and eyes. The risk is higher if swimmers swallow water or com- pletely submerge their heads, be- haviors more common in young children. Seeger said it is difficult to es- timate the number of people who have become ill from E. coli be- cause many cases go unreported. "People don't always recognize the symptoms and often dismiss it as the flu," he said. zx1Xxxxxxxx xzxxxxxx Mix & Mingle in '96 HIBBERT HOMECOMING Aug. 2-4,1996 in Dublin xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxzzzzr.
