Chipping and putting key to winning
30th annual Ironwood Golf Invitational
EXETER - A London man
emerged from 77 other golfers to
claim first place at the annual Iron-
wood Golf Invitational last
Wednesday.
Gerard Denomme shot a 72 for
the day missing par by one stroke.
He was only two strokes ahead sec-
ond place finisher Dave Holtzmann
and John Creighton who were tied
at 74.
Denomme credits the win to his
short game adding his chipping and
putting were accurate that day.
"I was just trying to keep the ball
in play, that was my game plan," he
said.
His strategy paid off. With a dif-
ficult pin placement and a strong
wind blowing, Denomme said he
refrained from using a driver, even
on par fives.
"My shots tend to be straighter
and more consistent with a three -
wood. If you were to attack those
pins and miss, you had a difficult
second shot to make."
Just trying to keep the ball in
play, he relied on his short game to
carry him through. "My short game
has saved me more often than not,"
he added.
For Denomme, getting past the
number two hole was the turning
point. It was a merciless hole that
claimed many double bogies and
ruined many scorecards that day.
"I parred on one and after hitting
par on two I felt pretty good. In this
game getting off to a good start
makes a big difference," he said.
Winning the tournament came as
a surprise to Denomme who was
playing with his brother Bob and
local golfer Don Smith.
"I was really trying hard to birdie
one of the last two holes. I felt I
needed that to have a chance at
winning...I didn't think one over
par was going to be good enough."
The fact that no one came in un-
der par didn't surprise Golf Club
Owner Gib Dow Jr. He said the dif-
ficult pin placements made the
course competitive even for the
most experienced golfer.
"They had to hit very strategic
shots. We didn't give them a lot of
green to work with," he said.
Ironwood Golf Invitational winners are from left, Conrad Kaptein ("DD" flight), Jake Van
Rooyen ("D" flight), Gerard Denomme (overall winner), Paul Stephens ("C" flight) and Sean
Van Dongen ("B" flight). Far right is Gib Dow Jr.
Fury lose to Woodstock Stallions.
EXETER - Sunday in Exeter, the

out on the short end of a 2-1 score.
The Fury were completely out-
played in the first half as the Wood-
stock players fired shot after shot
towards the net without nay luck.
The game was scoreless until the
second half when two Woodstock
players broke in alone on goalie
Craig Winbow who had nd c;lance

to make the save.
Shortly after Fury defender Justin
O'Rourke saved a goal by heading
the ball off the goal line a mad
scramble resulted in the hall bounc-
ing off a Fury player into the net
for a 2-0 Woodstock lead.
Exeter started to play better after
the second goal by starting to force
the play up the field, putting the
visitors on their heels. Jason
McFalls missed a good scoring
chance by putting his shot over the
net from in close. Mark Lynn did
get the Fury on the scoreboard by
heading a corner kick over the goal-
ie and into the net. Trailing 2-1 late
in the game the Fury kept pressing
for the tie but just ran out of time.
The Fury are off for the long
weekend and play next on August
10 in Embro.
