M.odernday Santa carves walking
sticks for children at Pinery Park
By Chris $tallies
TA Ryon. -
PINERY PARK - For the entire
drive the little girl asks herself
whether or not he will be there.
As the family pulls their van into
Pinery Provincial Park the little girl
is overflowing with anticipation.
"I hope he's here mom I hope
he's here again this year," she
quips.
Before they find their campsites,
they stop near the bridge. As they
Get out to stretch their legs from
the long journey the girl grasps her
mother by the hand.
"Mommy lets go look, lets go
see if he's here!" she says, pulling
her bewildered mother by the arm.
"Hurry mom hurry!".
Running as fast as her tiny feet
can carry her she scampers to the
Pinery docks with her mother in
tow. Reaching the top of the bridge
she peers over toward the dock.
Two boys are fishing with their fa-
ther. Nearby, a young couple set
their fishing rods in a canoe and
prepare ready to set out on the Aus-
able River.
But he's not there.
Unconvinced the little girl re-
leases her mother's hand and races
down the ramp. Her keen eyes scan
the dock floor until they come to
rest upon a pile of wood shavings
tucked neatly beneath the wooden
bench.
To anyone else, the small pile of
wood chips would go unnoticed,
but to her it is a sight that unleashes
a beaming smile upon her face.
"Mommy he's here, he's here!"

the park every summer and enjoys carving walking sticks
for children.

ry other child that visits Pinery Pro-
vincial Park.
That man is Fred Trachmann.
For seventeen years, Trachman
has been a regular camper at the
park. Known simply as "Fred"
among other campers, he sits at the
dock carving and whittling, trans-
forming ordinary pieces of wood
into decorated canes and wands.
Trachman says he makes about
100 sticks each summer. Num-
bering each stick, he calculates he
has made more than 1,700 since he
began visiting the Pinery in 1980.
Using a variety of wood carving
tools, he carries with him in a
pouch, Trachman practices the tra-
ditional techniques used by sheep-
herders in the mountains of Poland.
He says there are no two canes
alike and each one tells a story.
Each of the 60 to 120 notches
found on one cane symbolizes
something that, when strung togeth-
er from the top down, illustrates a
record of events.
"It's like a pigeon newspaper,"
he says with a strong Polish accent.
Admitting he has always enjoyed
working with his hands, he recalled
how he inadvertently captured the
attention of others the first time he
began carving canes.
"It somehow generates interest in
the campers and I had no intentions
on taking them with me when I left
so I gave them all away," he ex-
plained.
At that point a tradition was born
and he has been giving away his
canes ever since. He says it was the
children who were especially inter-
ested in what he was doing and
they would often stop to talk to
him.
"I make a lot of friends and many
come back to see me the following
year," he adds.
Like a modern-day Santa Clause,
Trachmann only gives the canes to
children. At any given time he has
a waiting list of 92 kids eagerly an-
ticipating the completion of their
walking stick which takes about
four hours to complete.
"I don't ask for money. I only ask
them (the children) where they
come from," he said.
In return for a walking stick, he
does ask for a thank -you. His price
list, a piece of cardboard paper cov-
ered in plastic, dictates what type
of thank -you is required.
A small cane costs a "thanks," a
medium size cane costs a "thank -
you," a Targe cane costs a "thank -
you" very much" and "thanks a lot"
is needed for a wand.
Trackman has gained a reputation
for friendliness and generosity and
is well known among campers and
park employees. A humble man
and a proud father of two grown
children, Trachmann has come to
enjoy the act of giving away his
canes more than the act of creating
them.
"I don't seek recognition, this is
something that has evolved. I enjoy
it and so do the children. I will
keep doing this as long as I can find
sticks to carve," he said.

Bob Mann, Councillor for Grand
Bend noted. "this is still early in the
process, however, we are encour-
aged by the input we have received
and the progress made to date, It is
our intent to ensure'that our constit-
uents are ' kept well informed

Council considers bylaw'
HAY TOWNSHIP - In answer to John Gillespie's request that the
township assume roadways in St. Joseph Shores Two subdivision,
council has agreed to form an appropriate bylaw for such an assump-
tion.
However, first council requires a valid petition. It feels letters signed
by the majority of residents in favor of the assumption, submitted by
Gillespie at the July 15 meeting, were unsuitable.
Council was also concerned about the area's road signs and piltais tri
the subdivision's entrance, which are located on the road allowance..
Proper signs are to be installed and paid for by the association. Also re_
quired is clarification on the liability of the township in regard to the
pillars.
At the cost of residents, subdivision roads have been brought up to
township standards.
