Statues in the
Garden exhibit
By Heather Mir
T -A Reporter
ST. JOSEPH - As gardening
makes a come -back in popularity,
interest in statuary has also grown.
Artist Geri Binks, who works out
of Lakeview Studios on Highway
21 near St. Joseph, has tapped into
this hobby as a source of in-
spiration.
She will be holding an exhibition, -
and sale of artwork on July 20 and
21 from 10 am to 8 p.m. at the stu-
dio.
Binks interprets birdbaths, pots,
benches and small tables in a
unique fashion. She has also creat-
ed installation pieces and torso
sculptures. The artwork is de-
signed for the outdoors and is hand-
crafted from man-made stone.
The material she uses was de-
veloped more than 60 years ago to
replicate the natural environment of
alpine and rock plants. The stone
sinks and troughs made of lime-
stone and sandstone were used by
alpine specialists as a growing me-
dium. The ingredients in the mix-
ture have been modified by Sinks
with the advice of an expert crafts-
man who has worked in tile and ter-
razo for more than 50 years.
It has a cement base and although
it is durable the soft, porous sur-
face will weather with age. Binks
uses earth pigments to enhance the
color and surface texture as well as
vintage tile to create mosaics.
She has a special interest in lan-
guage and has engraved some of
the garden tablets with letters. The
human body and highly stylized
face are also common themes of
her work.

The idea of creating pots and oth-
er garden sculpture came to Bink
as she was working on several large
figure drawings. A fern was stand-
ing nearby and looked as if the
plant was coming out of the head
she had sketched. The drawings be-
came the basis for several "head"
pots and gradually she expanded
into other items.
The owners of a specialty garden
store, Anything Grows in Stratford
have purchased two of her pots for
their inventory of unusual garden
art and she is considering creating a
distinctive line for the store.
Binks received her formal educa-
tion at Sheridan College in Oak-
ville and Fanshawe College in Lon-
don. She completed a four-year
apprenticeship in the Christopher
Wallis Glass Art Studio in London
in 1984 and has also studied at the
Centre for Medieval and Ren-
aissance Studies in Oxford, Eng-
land. She was the recipient of an
Ontario Arts Council grant in 1989
and has studied and taught a work-
shop in using the computer for art.
Binks has held five solo exhibi-
tions since 1988 in addition to
many selected group exhibitions.
Collectors of her work include The
Blackburn Group, The London
Club, The London Regional Art
and Historical Museums as well as
private individuals.

Eating a serving of fish high in omega-3
polyunsaturated fatty acids once per week
can be beneficial to your heart. An exam-
ple of this is a 3 oz. piece of salmon.
We worry sometimes about the effect spi-
cy foods have on our stomach linings. A recent study compared
4 meals: 1) steak & french fries, 2) same meal plus 6 aspirin
tablets, 3) pepperoni pizza, 4) a spicy Mexican meal full of jala-
peno peppers. The worst for the stomach? The steak and fries
plus aspirin tablets.
A sunburn does not show for 2-6 hours after you come in from
the sun. So you cannot tell by looking at your skin during expo-
sure how bad you might be burning. Use your sunscreen and
don't overdose on sun exposure.
Did you know that the idea of canning food for preservation
goes back to 1804 when Frenchman, Nicolas Appert, opened
the world's first canning factory? This fellow also invented the
bouillon cube a bit later.
