Zone Playdowns
Zone Playdowns for junior bowl-
ers will be held in Simcoe on Sun-
day. The winners of these playoffs
will compete at the Ontario Sum-
mer games in London in August.
The Exeter Club will be sending
five members to Simcoe. Andrea
Weigand and Laura Pearson, Chad
South and Jason Batten will com-
pete in pairs. Shawn Kramer will
represent Exeter in the under 16
event in singles competition.
Correction
Last week the T -A reported An-
dre Weigand won the silver medal
in singles competition at the Onta-
rio Junior Singles Lawn Bowling
Championships in Toronto and
would compete at the Nationals in
Regina when in fact the trip was re-
served for the first place winner
only. Also, scores from the Exeter
Lawn Bowling Club Annual Open
Pairs Tournament are corrected
here: First place, Peter and Gloria
McFalls, 3 wins and 33. Second
place, John Batten and Har Brint-
nell, 3 wins and 28. Third place,
Bob Thompson and Doris Hack-
ney, 2 wins 38 +18. Consolation
prize, Roy and Barb Triebner, 1
win 33 +4. The T -A apologizes for
the errors.

Sharks soccer team defeated Ken -
salt Park 7-1 recently.

Cox tied the game at one but the
Sharks kept attacking resulting in
further goals by Tony Regier, John
Rijnen with two, as well as two
goals from Justin Muller and Chris
Van Esbrr xk.
Assists came from Van Esbroeck,
and John and Tony Regier.
Exeter goaltender Nico Mellace

first and second place teams
Third place Co-op Juniors will play Byron and Clinton for league supremacy
EXETER - Scot Kemp went the
distance on the mound for the Exet-
er Co-op Juniors as they defeated
the London North Stars 11-6 on
Saturday.
Backed up by a strong defensive
effort behind him, Kemp pitched
the full nine innings recording sev-
en strike outs, walking six batters
and only allowing eight hits.
Exeter also came up big behind
the bats with Blake Schade hitting a
triple and a single. Bill Hodge dou-
bled, Joe Maskell hit three singles,
Dale Hopf recorded two singles,
Dwight Gingerich doubled, Dan
Van Straiten singled and Jason
Maskell singled and got on base
twice after being hit by the pitcher.
On Thursday, Exeter picked up
two easy points when Strathroy ar-
rived without enough players.
However Exeter lent the visiting
team on of their own (Dan Van
Stratten) to give them nine players
in order to carry on with the game.
Dennis McCann, Dwight Ginge-
rich and Greg Vissor shared pitch-
ing duties for Exeter.
Perhaps knowing the game was
already in the bag, Exeter's defense
became slack and committed four
errors with all resulting in Strath-
roy runs.
Mark Glavin led Exeter's offense
with a home run over the right
field fence and a single. Scot Kemp
tripled and singled, Blake Schade
hit two singles. Darryl Hartman,
Chad Ramer and Jason Maskell all
had singles.
The Exeter Co-op Juniors are
now 7-5-1 with two big games
scheduled for this week. Thursday
Hole -in -one shooters credit luc
GRAND BEND - In the game of
golf, the odds against getting a
hole -in -one are one in 23,000.
Three local golfers beat the odds
recentlyby making the remarkable
shot that most other duffers can
only dream about.
Bob Deane from
Southcott Pines,
Dave McLeod
from Grand Bend
and Doug Du-
charme from Zu-
rich sunk a hole -
in -one at two area
golf courses within
a few weeks of
each other.
Bob Deane shot his hole -in -one
at Bayview Golf Club on July first.
It happened on the number 12
hole, a 165 yard par three. Deane
used a driver for the remarkable
shot and said the bail hit the edge
of the green and rolled in.
"I know it's a rarity but it was
just luck," he said.
This was the first hole -in -one for
Deane who has only been a rec-
reational golf player for the last
five years.
For Doug Doucharme, his hole -
in -one was his second; he shot the
first one 15 years ago at the same
golf course and...on the
same hole.
Ducharme used a sev-
en iron to clear 162
yards from the tee to the
pin on the number eight
hole at Oakwood Golf
Club while golfing with
friends about three
weeks ago. He made the
same shot during a tour-
nament 15 years ago but
according to Ducharme "it's always
a surprise to make a shot like that."
Dave McLeod also shot his hole -
in -one at Oakwood's number 8
hole. He too used a seven Iron and
he also made the remarkable shot
on that same hole 38 years ago.
However, McLeod is a hole -in -one
veteran. This was his ninth hole -in -
one since he began playing golf as
Bob Dean
e
Da
a teeneger and after a while, McLe-
od says the novelty wears off.
"1 stopped collecting trophy balls
three holes ago," he said.
McLeod, who is an experienced
golfer, has played in a number of
competitive tour-
naments over the
. ' years but he admits
a shot like that
boils down to luck
and statistics.
"There are a lot
more people get-
ting into the
game...with more
ve McLeod people playing the
odds of it hap-
pening more often get better."
Still, the odds are astronomical
and most golfers concede you're
more likely to get struck by light-
ning than beat the odds; but mak-
ing the ultimate golf shot looms on
the back of every golfer's mind.
"I know lots of guys who would' - - -
like to get a hole-in-one...but it's
one of those things," said McLeod.
night Exeter is in Byron to take on
the first place team in the league.
Game time is at 8:30 p.m. On Sat-
urday afternoon, Exeter will meet
second place Clinton.
Coach Gary Hartman said their
next two games will be crucial. The
Co-op Juniors are currently in third
place behind Byron and Clinton
but after Saturday that may change.
"A couple of Exeter victories
here would make quite a big differ-
ence," said Hartman.
