Health. Unit seeking partners
to develop heart programs
Community-based group met to
brainstorrp about expanding
"Take Heart Huron" program
CLINTON - The Huron County Health Unit host-
ed a Heart Health Meeting last Wednesday to bring
together health care practitioners and members of
the community. who have a connection with heart
health. The Health Unit is ex-
panding its "Take Heart Huron" pro-
gram and is looking for partners in
developing a county -wide heart
health program.
Working to reduce the incidence
of heart disease is a provincially -
supported mandate of the Health
Unit and one of the criteria for
funding is public input.
Heart disease is the leading cause
death in Huron County and makes up more than a
quarter of the total deaths. This number is also re-
flective of the provincial statistics. In addition to
the number of people dying, heart disease results in
illness, lost work, lost quality time with family and
a financial burden to the health care system. The
cost of treating ischemic heart disease is estimated
at 52 billion in Ontario and loss of productivity is
estimated at $4.5 billion.
"When all other other causes of death declined,
heart disease rose," said Sharon Abel, Healthy Life -
II
othe
causes
declin
disease
styles Team Leader, adding, "The use of tobacco is
a major health problem."
Quitting smoking is related to a decrease in heart
disease noted in the mid 1960's. At least 13,000
deaths in Ontario can be attributed to tobacco use
that results in cancers and contributes to heart dis-
ease. In 1993-94 London's University Hospital per-
formed 314 tobacco -related coronary bypass surger-
ies costing the health care system more than $7
million. Tobacco use is associated with 80 per cent
of coronary bypass surgeries.
Although many risk factors such as
family history, age and gender cannot
be changed, lifestyle choices can make
a difference. Being smoke-free, phys-
ically active and making healthy food
choices areways to lower risk of heart
disease. Stress management is also an
important factor in increasing heart
health.
Following an overview of causes
and ramifications of heart disease in
Ontario, the meeting broke into small discussion
groups tha identified obstacles to creating a county-
wide program. One barrier is the fact Huron is a
spread -out community without a central means of
distributing information. An attempt to change at-
titudes through communication was also discussed.
The group will meet again at 10 a.m. on August
21 at the Health Unit in Clinton to plan heart health
program activites.
