EXETER - This holiday week-
end, pools, lakes and rivers will
be the popular spots as people
try to escape the heat. But if
they're not water smart the es-
cape they find could be all too
final.
Drowning accounts for more
than 1,200 latalitics each year in
Canada, and is the second lead-
ing cause of accidental death of
Canadians under 55.
The Exeter Swimming Pool
would Tike to give some helpful
tips that might help to save a
life:
I. Darn to swim - there is no
substitute for swimming skills -
lcarn now!
2. Supervise children near the
water - lifeguards don't watch
backyard pool and bathtubs, you
do!
3. Protect your neck - preven-
tion is the only curc for a para-
lyzing injury. Diving in shallow
water shatters lives.
4. Wear a lifejacket or P.F.D.
- it won't work if you don't
wear il.
5. Drive your craft responsibly
- your boat can only carry so
much, and remember to watch
for weather changes.
6. If you drink around the wa-
ter, he responsible - boating and
boozing don't mix, so think be-
fore you drink.
Remember to be water
smart...and play it safe in, on
and near the water this5summer.
Don't become a drowniljg statis-
tic!
