The Express won in the ninth in- ning 6-5. Locals enjoy ummer hockey aver, MacLean, Bell, Gilfillan decide to try something new By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - Hockey in the summer, why not? While it may be called "summer hockey", it's really only played in the spring as four young players from Exeter will contest to. As the Stanley Cup playoffs have just concluded, so has the hock- ey season for Mark Bell, Geoff Mauer, Jeff MacLean and Chad Gil- fillan. "I had the opportunity so I thought I'd give it a try," said Gilfillan who played major bantam in Waterloo for the Flyers the last couple of months. He suited up for both the Midget Generals and the Junior 'D' Hawks this past winter. Just completing his first summer hockey season, as they all have other than MacLean, Gilfillan said, "every weekend is a new sea- son." His team, along with those the others play on are in tournaments on the weekend so if you don't do well at one, the next weekend is like starting the year all over. "The practices are the most beneficial thing," added Gilfillan. For MacLean, this is not his first taste of summer hockey. Playing for the Bluewater (Sarnia) Sharks now for both the minor and major bantam teams he tried it a couple of years ago. "I like it because it keeps you in shape and I have a good coach," said MacLean who played for the Exeter Minor Hockey's bantam Legionnaires during the winter. While Bell's London Blues minor bantam team didn't really have tryouts, in Sarnia, MacLean says there was a big selection process. "They contacted me. There was about 45 guys that tried out," said MacLean. Scouts watching: The boys admitted as a group that getting Junior 'B' scouts to come to Exeter and sec them play is a little tough but playing summer hockey is the opposite. They say there arc lots of scouts in the stands and all are hoping they were well noticed. "I thought it would be a good experience," said Mavcr of his first year. He plays for the Saugeen City (Durham) minor bantam Platers and has the longest trip to make. "If you want to go anywhere in hockey you have to play summer hockey," added Mauer who played for the Legionnaires this past winter. Some may argue that summer hockey is just too much of thc sport. But as pointcd out by the local boys as they surrounded Mavcr s pool was that their summer hockey is over by July I which still gives them plenty of time to enjoy thc warm weather activities. Bell, who excels in just about every sport he takes on was a big defensemen for the Generals last year and his hockey future looks promising. "It's higher calibre hockey," said Bell of summer hickey. But there is also the chance of playing against sonic of your bud- dies which he did as his Blues tied MacLean's Sharks 6-1 and ticd 2- 2. left MacLean, front left; Chad Gilfillan; Geoff Mauer, hock, left; Mark Bell. Merner has big hit in the ninth His hit scored two runs as Express beat Red Sox 6-5 By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - Trailing by a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth in- ning, the Exeter Express came back to beat their biggest rivals the Till- sonburg Red Sox Sunday after- noon. At the Alvin Willert Field, Ex- press second baseman Marty Mern- er smacked a single up the middle to score Rick Boon and a sliding Dave Russell to win 6-5. With one out, right fielder Ron Elliott started the comeback rally as he doubled down the line and he scored when Russell connected on a full count double to straight away centre. The win pushed the Express over the .500 mark as they have a Great Lakes Senior Baseball record of 5- 4. They tried to improve on that last night when they hosted Lakeside. Sunday saw the Express get off to a shakey start defensively as they made a couple of errors allowing the visitors to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But veteran centrefielder Don Macdonald stole second and while swiping third scored on a wild throw to third base, making it I-1. Catcher D'arcy Martin made a couple of fine defensive plays in the second frame as he dove for a pop up ten feet in front of the plate and gunned down a runner trying to Baseball roundup Exeter Rookie 'B' 11 June 14 Exeter 28 at Mitchell Blue Jays 31 Home runs: Erik Denomme, Andrew Sedlak Triples: Nicholas Anstett (2), Kellan He- rsey, Daniel Lovie, Ian Drummond (2) Doubles: Anstett (2). All games were 15 ends. In the women's division, Exete and St. Marys met in a two -out - of -three elimination. Gloria McFalls and June Hodgson of Exeter came back to win the second game but lost in the deciding game. There were five men's teams entered and they all played four games each. This was a round-robin format with the top team going to the provincial final next week in Brampton. Exeter's entry of Peter and Shawn McFalls beat St. Marys #2 19- 5, topped Goderich 17-10 and got bye Scaforth 16-7 before losing 16-12 in 15 ends. steal second. Third baseman Bill Glover made a good play in the fourth when, with runners at second and third, he caught a Tillsonburg base runner trying to come home. Scot Russell started on the mound for the winners and allowed 12 base hits before giving way to Scot Davidson who kept the Red Sox at bay until Mike Agnew came on and retired the Sox in the top of the ninth on just six pitches. Split earlier games: The Express travelled to Strathroy last Wednes- day night where they lost a slim 4-3 decision. It was the third time that Exeter has lost by a single run this season. Merner did well on the hill al- lowing just four hits in the first three innings while fanning six dur- ing a very long eight and two-thirds innings outing. O fensively, Dave Russell broke out o his hitting slump as he had three hi including a double. The hosts won a game in the bottom of the nint inning. Last Tuesday the Express had lit- tle trouble with Byron winning big. 12-2. Pitcher Dave Atthill went a strong seven innings and picked up 14 his third win of the season. He al- lowed nine hits while fanning two and giving up no walks. That's what I'm calling the playoffs this year. It is really unbe- lievable the amount of the cuts from sticks the players have been giving and receiving. No respect for the stick what so ever. (have you noticed when a player appears on TV the nicks and cuts?) 1 re- member in one game. (Toronto and Vancouver) Gartner, Gill, Manderville, Macoun were all cut. I remember hack in the 70's you would go through the whole se- ries and maybe 2 guys would be cut. Now 2 guys a game are getting cut. Although the Bruins. who were the toughest team in sports. (we were so tough that Dave "The Ham- mer" Schultz said in his book, that he "The Hammer", couldn't sleep the night before a game in the Boston Gar- dens because he knew what was wait- ing for him). My point is, that although we were tough, we did cut guys with fists maybe. but we didn't use the sticks. The culprit behind all this stick work is... the worst rule ever put in any sport. Now your saying "how can a rule put into hockey to stop fights end up causing cuts on faces and more stick work?" If I get you with my stick and you know if you drop the gloves and straighten me out. you will he tossed out of the game. So rather than getting tossed out of the game. you will wait your chance and get me with the stick. Now please don't say two wrongs don't make a right. Wake up and smell the roses! This ain't cricket. this is a tough sport played by tough (well some) guys who are on stainless steel blades going twenty miles per hour, carrying a club and there are no running out of bounds.
