There are four major partners working with the ABCA toward this goal: the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), Tree Plan Canada, private landowners and five area nurser- ies. The MNR subsidizes tree plant- ing costs for those seedlings pur- chased from MNR nurseries. An example of such a grant is being coordinated from the Wingham Area office under the name Project Tree Cover. This program was de- signed to help landowners reforest their land in rural Ontario. Just this spring, the Wingham Area MNR office arranged for the planting of 400,000 trees for 66 landowners. Project Tree Cover provides: technical expertise to as- sist the landowner in preparing the reforestation project, tree seed- lings, site preparation, tree plant- ing and maintenance services, as required and project monitoring to ensure quality control. Private landowners in Huron and Perth counties interested in im- proving at least five acres of idle, marginal or highly -erodible farm- land are invited to contact the Exeter UCW hold June meeting EXETER - Alma Langford presided at the U.C.W. afternoon unit meet- ing and read several smiles. The minutes were read, roll call taken and treasurer's report given. It was announced that 500 were fed at the smorgasbord. There will be a quilt show in Goderich in August. The Friendship Tea will be held on June 16. Summer event will be held July 23 at Siloam church with a fee of $18. Barb Harrison said they had decided to join Amnesty International. Plans are to start a singles club. The September meeting will begin with a potluck dinner. There are four missionaries working in Korea and they would like some prayer ribbons. Convener of the program, Doris Denham, read the first two command- ments. Fannie Cosby wrote about 2000 hymns - one of her favourites was Rescue the Perishing. The group enjoyed several of the old familiar hymns. A poem to father was then read. A skit was given by Doris Denham, Ruth Brock, Mary Ker - nick, Marjorie Delbridge, Audrey McRoberts, Hazel Milker, Muriel Mar- rshall representing dictator, commentator, imitator, agitator,, hessytator, "pekytator and speaktator. Ruth Brock entertained with a poem 'Vacations'. The meeting closed with repeating the UCW benediction. 11 1 MUSIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN by Frances Balodis, M.Ed., ARCT, RMT A Unique Method of Music Education for Children Starting with Ages 3-8 • Piano/Keyboard, Rhythm, Singing, Ear Training, Sight Reading, Theory • Parent attends with child in small group, 1 hour lessons For the teacher In your area: Exeter/Zurich AIIsa Cralg/Lucan Laurie Erb Sharon DeVree 2367722 232.4387 rWe have expanded to Exeter IIII CIS Asset Management c S Corporation is pleased to announce the recent opening of their Financial Planning Centre offering • Mutual Funds • RRSP's • RRIF's • GIC's • Commercial Paper We can assist you with ALL your financial needs at 386 Main St. Exeter 1-800-395-0487 235-4080 Fax: 235-4083 Wingham office of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Through Tree Plan Canada, the National Tree Foundation gave the AMCA grants to be used on three different projects. The first was a subsidized t ree planting service for 80,000 trees. The ABCA planted seedling trees on private and municipal lands by machine and hand planting through this program. Due to the announcement and advertisement of this subsidy, the number of trees planted by the ABCA rose by 30,000. Secondly, partial funding was given for planting 4,250 trees by ABCA crews on the Dinsmore Management Area recently ac- quired by the Conservation Au- thority, in Hay Swamp. The third project occurred at the Parkhill Conservation Area. Here 2000 students from seven area schools worked to plant 9,000 trees of which the cost was partial- ly covered by the National Tree Foundation. Private landowners helped to in- crease the tree cover in our area by purchasing trees through the other groups. Two -hundred and three landowners picked up seedlings and planted the trees by themselves while the ABCA planted trees for 43 landowners. These landowners paid $125/ 1.000 trees to have their trees planted by ABCA crews, as well as $0. I0/seedling; not a high cost for increasing local tree cover. Five local nurseries were distri- bution centres for larger stock trees. Two -hundred and fifty-eight people ordered trees 'through the ABCA and picked up the stock at their local nursery for windbreak and roadside plantings. These nur- series allowed people easier access to the trees, creating greater local participation in the windbreak and roadside planting programs. Through the created partnerships, landowners and local environmen- tal groups are making definite strides toward increasing tree cover in the Ausable-Bayfield watershed, an asset which will be of benefit to all.
