Hunter handed out jail terms and fines on charges of impaired driv-
ing , having care and control of a vehicle while impaired, fraud, as-
sault, breach of probation, failing to appear in court and attempted
theft
Impaired driving
Jerome Hartman of
Hensall was fined $800
after pleading guilty to a
charge of impaired driv-
ing. His vehicle was
stopped by police on No-
vember 8, 1993 on Huron
street ,west of Exeter. Of-
ficers found a strong odour of alcohol in the vehicle and the accused
had trouble walking and missed his nose in the sobriety test.
At the Exeter OPP station, breathalizer tests taken at 1.48 a.m. and
2.14 a.m. registered readings of 2.10 and 2.00.
Breach of probation
A fine of $100 was levied against James Hawke of Hensall for
breach of probation on a previous attendance in court. Two other
Charges relating to an incident on December 6, 1993 were dropped.
Ability impaired
Robert Lott of Stratford will pay a fine of $1,000 for operating a
vehicle while his ability to do so was impaired. The charge followed
an accident on Concession 8-9 of Stephen township at 10.59 p.m. on
April 14, 1994 when a vehicle Lott was operating rolled over.
The accused with three passengers in the vehicle at first denied be-
ing the driver and said a dog caused the mishap. He was taken to the
Exeter OPP station where he registered readings of 2.40 and 2.20 on
the breathalizer machine at 12.51 a.m. and 1.2 0 a.m. , respectively.
Alcohol content over .80 limit
Graham Tait of Kippen was fined $750 for operating a vehicle
while having a blood alcohol content over the .80 limit. He was
stopped by police at 1.55 a.m. on November 20, 1993 on Huron
street west in Stephen township for an overcorrected turn. Breathaliz-
er tests at the Exeter OPP station registered readings of 1.60 and
1.50.
Care and control while impaired
Joel Speake of Port Franks was fined $800 for having care and con-
trol of a vehicle while his ability was impaired and Brian Koch of
Dashwood will pay $750 on a similar charge
Speake was found by police at 3.22 a.m. on December 3, 1993
sleeping behind the wheel of his vehicle on Highway 4 in Usborne
township. The officer reported a strong odour of alcohol and breatha-
lizer tests revealed readings of 1.20 and 1.20.
Koch was slumped over the wheel of his vehicle when found by
police at 1.15 a.m. on Highway 84, west of Zurich. His breathalizer
readings were both 1.80 at the Exeter OPP detachment. While sus-
pending his licence for one year by statute Judge Hunter commented,
" If you drive within 12 months 1 can guarantee a jail sentence."

a charge of fraud. She was found guilty at a previous court appear-
ance of defrauding Gerry MacLean and Son Home Hardware store of
more than $8,000 while an employee at the Exeter north store.
In asking for leniency her lawyer said due mainly to family prob-
lems, Todd got farther and farther behind financially and all monies
were cycled back to the family. He continued, " She has totally co-
operated with police and the entire loss has been paid back to the em-
ployer."
The jail term will he served intermittently from 9 a.m. Saturdays
until 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Assault, failing to comply, attempted theft
Gregory Lovie of Hay township will spend a total of 90 days in jail
after being found guilty on g number of charges. The assault charges
arose from an incident at a New Year's Eve party in Crediton.
At the time of the assault charges being laid, Lovie was under pro-
bation for obstructing police. The attempted theft occurred when he
was apprehended while trying to steal gasoline from a Huron Board
of Education bus.
Lovie's lawyer said there was a lot of drinking going on and his
client sincerely regrets his actions. The attempted gasoline theft came

Grand Bend ratepayers
see a small tax increase
The village's portion of the budget is down .13 percent
GRAND BEND - Ratepayers
in Grand Bend received a mini-
mal tax increase Monday night as
council passed its 1994 budget.
The mill rate increased .7 per-
cent which means that locals will
be spending $1.58 more for every
$1,000 of assessed property. A
property assessed at $100,000
will therefore cost an additional
$158.00.
"We are showing essentially
the same as last year," said coun-
cillor Cam Ivey who, along with
administrator Paul Turnbull did
most of the work on the budget.
. The municipality's portion of
the overall budget is down .13
percent.
"We came very close to our hud-
get of 1993. We showed a loss of
$5,000 compared to $23,000 the
year before," said Ivey.
Grand Bend has two major
sources of revenue, the renting of
dockage and parking.
Ivey said he hopes the new mu-
nicipal parking lots will generate
up to $40,000 in revenue. The vil-
lage is also looking to collect up to
$30,000 in parking and noise
fines.
Grand Bend will donate a total
of $12,450 this year, $8,000 to the
local Chamber of Commerce and
$2,000 to the Huron Country Play-
house.
As far as the breakdown of the
hudget goes, Grand Bend has al-
located $284,866 for trans-
portation which include salaries
and paying $20,000 for the con-
necting link.
Protection to Persons and Prop-
erty is set at $103,6(X) this year
while Recreation is $7,535, how-
ever that docs not include any cap-
ital projects.
Planning and Development for
1994 is $13,300 while the parking
lot hudget is $50,6(X).
For the Parks and Beach, the
figure is $50,885 while Environ-
mental Services is $64,000. The
Grand Bend Harbour plans on
collecting $250,000 in revenue
while it will cost them $23,630.
