Deaf/tot Sir Francis Blond Flead.
London July 28. -Sir Francis Bond
Head, formerly Lieutenant -Governor of
Upper Canada, and, well known as an
anther, died in London, England, ou
the 23rd inst.' F. B. head was Geyer
-
nor of Upper Canada from 1885 to 1838.
He'was born near Rochester, England,
in 1793, and entered military service
at aulearly age-inithe Royal Engineers
Corps,- serving with eonsidel'able dis-
tinction. He was present at the .battle
of Waterloo, and served in the ca,m
paign under Wellington,bearing a'high
character in his profession, so much so
that aiminin* ompany:gave invitation to
explore the gold and silver mines of
South America between Buenos Ayres
and the Andes. He reached Buenos
Ayres in 1825, and in a short tithe' had
completed the work to the great satis-
faction of the company, h::,ving crossed
the Pampas four tithes a'td the Andes
twice, add ridden upwards of six thous-
and miles, most of the time unaccom-
panied. His "Rough Notes," ;publish..
ed after his return to Englar d, give a
graphic description of his expedition.
Having gained a majority in 1828, he
retired from the .service on the half pay
list. In November, 1835, he was ap-
pointed Lieutennant Governor of Upper
Canada, and heldoffice.during the . dis-
tracted period 'or 1837 and -until.1838:
He has been censured for his adminis-
tration of the affairs during the rebel-
lion; and accused of having
trifled with
the disaffected parties ; but his "Narra-
tive " of the events which took place,
and Which was publishod on his return
to England, has been held to exonerate
him in a great measure from the
charges preferred, and the justify the
course he took for 'tile' suppression of
the revolt. Since that period Sir Fran-
cis had not held any public cffice, but
lived a life of repose.. ,

In the Mountain • Meadow Massacre
Trial to -day, Elizabeth Hoag testified
-Lived at Harmony in 1859 ; was at
a meeting called before Lee, and the
Indians started for the massacre; it was
stated at the meeting` that the emig-
rants should be destroyed. An express
was sent' to Brigham Young, and Lee,
at the head of the soldiers• and Indians
started. After the massacre,:'a; meet-
ing was called to hear Lee's,report.-
Lee stood up and said lie Welinted: the.
Indians to rush upon the emigrants,
but they would not. He then put up a
handkerchief, and a man came out of
the emigrant camp. The emigrants
were promised peace if they would give
up their arms. They agreed, and.
marched out along the soldiers, who
shot them down at a signal, and the
Indians killed the women. He said one
man had a baby in his arms.; after the
first fire Lee said, "Give up that
child," The man replied, " if I die
this child dies with me ; I know you,
John D. Lee, despite your paint." Lee
said he had to shoot the man and child
While Lee was reporting, President
Young arrived, and saw the children in
the wagon in front of the nee tin
house. One boy, eight years, old,
pointed to Indian Joe, and said, "That
nuan -killed lay- pupal he has my „paptee-

children, and wanted them to forget
