Exeter Elites end season
Baton twirling competition a growing sport in Ontario
EXETER - Baton twirling has come a long way in
Exeter in the past four years.
The Exete{ Elites, in their fourth year as a club,
regularly attend competitions all over Ontario. This
year, the National Baton Twirling Association is
holding its competition in Toronto, and girls will at-
tend from all over the world to compete.
Coaches Sandie Vandershot and Sue Maddock
say that the sport of batoning has come a long way
from the odd parade and Saturday practices. Com-
peting in novelty events such as ribbon batoning,
duets, and other classes requires coordination, mem-
ory work, and physical and mental strength. They
say the girls who participate enjoy increased self es-
teem and learn about good sportsmanship.
For those with the nerve, a Florida company
makes a special -order -only baton that spins with
flames coming out of either end.
The Elites wound up their year with a small ban-
quet last Wednesday evening. Practices resume
again in September, and the coaches say the first
month is free to allow girls a chance to try the sport.
Regular competitions for the club are held in St.
Marys, Wingham, Walkerton, and Owen Sound.
Anyone interested in the Elites can contact Van-
dershot at 284-0450.
Brlanne Webber (left) and Jocelyn Cressman were both first place finishers from the Ex-
eter Elites at the Owen Sound FunFest on June 4. Welber, in her third year of baton twirl-
ing won overall in her age division. Cressman won !fest overall in first year competitors.
Behind the girls are the. several other trophies they won in other categories at the Fun -
Fest.
A long history of baseball is displayed here in Dan Masse's hat collection. The new Cincinnati
cap he wears now will be the next team to have the advantage of Masse's pitching skills.
Baseball dream comes
true for Zurich youth
Cincinatti Reds claim Dan Masse in recent draft picks
By Erin Lobb
T -A staff
ZURICH - Baseball practise on Dashwood's diamonds
sears to have paid off for Dan Masse who was recently
drafted to the Cincinnati•Reds.
"1 was surprised but I was expecting it," said Masse
who has also been coveted by the Kansas City Royals
and the Minnesota Twins. "One game i was playing
Connor's state, the number one team in the U.S. in our
di,,ision. We beat them three to one. That was the day i
pitched 94 miles per hour. Shortly after that Kansas
CRY called me."
Masse's career took off shortly after he started school
at' Northeastern College in Oklahoma last year, where
both he and his brother Derek had earned a scholarship.
H0 played 25 games before Christmas, then returned in
January to play 70 more games, at which time he aver-
aged five wins to one loss. "Pretty much from then on
people started watching what i was doing," says Masse.
it was the end of May this year however, that serious
offers were put on the table. "Cincinatti saw me throw
a 91 mile per hour pitch and called me as soon as i got
back home." ,
Alt soon as his visa comes through Masse will depart
for, Princeton West Virginia where he will play ad-
va4ced rookie hall until August. "As long as i do well
then next fall i'll go to Florida to play with an in-
structional league." This league works on smoothing
out any rough edges a player may have before he ad-
vances to the Major league.
if Masse is able to maintain his 89.9 mile per hour
pitching average he may well be off to spring -training
with the Cincinatti Reds next February.
Under the careful guidance of coach John Sterns, 1 )
year catcher for the New York Mets, and Brad Kelly.
head coach at University of Miami, Masse will have an
excellent opportunity to set new personal records.
Rovering coach, of Canadian Baseball Hall of Famc.
Fergie Jenkins wilt occasionally be assisting Masse in
his practises as well.
As for living and playing in the states, Masse says he
doesn't mind. "They are more into their sports down
there. Even at high school games they get 10 times
more people out to watch than we do." The fact that
he will be unable to see his girlfriend, whom he met in
Oklahoma, is a bit of a disappointment.
Masse's parents Gerard and Henrica Masse add that,
"it would be nice to see him play for the Blue Jays
some day though." if Masse, who was the first first
year draft pick ever at Northeastern, continues to have
the success he has that dream may well be possible.
