Top high school athletes
honoured at annual banquet
362 students competed on 23 dif
ferent teams during the 1993-94
high school season
EXETER - The annual Athletic Banquet and
Awards Night brought to a close a memorable 1993-
94 for sports at South Huron District High School.
In her opening remarks to those gathered for the cer-
emony, athletic director Pat Rowe said that, at last
count, some 362 competitors took part on 23 different
teams during the year - a year that included
highlights such as the field hockey team
re -capturing the OFSAA title on home
ground, senior boys volleyball and
junior boys soccer capturing Huron -
Perth titles; and midget boys bas-
ketball, junior girls soccer,
and senior boys soccer
teams all winning their Hu-
ron championships. The end of
the season also brought honour to
South Huron as Randy Johnson, a senior
javelin thrower on the track and field team won WOS-
SA, the OFSAA regionals, and the provincial gold in
his sport.
Guest speaker for the evening was Paul Hillman, a
kinesiology student at the University of Western On-
tario and a player on their varsity soccer team. Al-
though he admitted to not being a polished speaker,
Hillman told the group about his experiences while
following a soccer scholarship to Kentucky, but later
returned to Ontario for his education.
"He did have a message," said Rowe later, noting
some students eager to go the scholarship route to the
U.S. might have second thoughts.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of
nearly 70 individual awards to the top competitors in
each sport. The OFSAA-winning field hockey team
members were instead presented with a team photo in
recognition of their victory.
Special individual awards were presented at the end
of the evening. The John Peters Memorial Awards
were awarded to Jen Robertson and Wayne Robinson.
Presented to members of the basketball teams, the re-
cipients both helped with running the annual ele-
mentary school tournament, Robertson helped with a
basketball clinic, and Robinson coached the junior
boys team this season.
fhe Mike Prendergast Memorial Award, also for
basketball players, was presented to Chris Pass-
more and Doug Sitter, the female and
male players who combined excellence in
academics and in on the court.
The two representatives selected for the On-
tario Education Leadership Camp for one week this
summer were Richelle Elder and
leAdam Jean.
Chosen as Athletes of the Year were
junior girl Cara Gardner for her con-
tributions in field hockey, volleyball and
soccer, junior boy Adam Jean for participating in vol-
leyball and soccer, senior girl Jen Romphf for playing
on the volleypall and basketball teams, and senior boy
Jeff Lingard for his contributions to the '-olleyball and
soccer teams.
The Paw Awards went to Jen Romphf and Adam
Jean. The awards requirements are that recipients
must be enrolled in physical education, play at least
two major sports and demonstrate good skills, lead-
ership, academic achievement and are valuable team
members.
The Panther Award went to two recipients this year,
Randy Johnson, and Jeff Lingard, for their out-
standing achievement find contribution to athletics at
South Huron throughout their school careers.

An early -innings onslaught couldn't
be overcome for the senior base-
ball team
LAKESIDE - The Exeter Ex-
press travelled to Lakeside Fri-
day evening, losing a close game
to the home team, 6-5.
True to form, the Express got
on the board early, with two runs
in the first inning on two singles
by Don MacDonald and Scott
Russell, and a double by Rick
Boon.
Lakeside were able to respond
with one run in the second, and
kept the pressure up on pitcher
Scott Russell with three runs in
the second, and two more in the
third.
Exeter got the bats going again
in the sixth inning, capitalizing
on two walks from Lakeside's
pitching with a single from Mar-
ty Merner and a double by Dave
Atthill, putting two more runs on
the board. A double by Boon in
the seventh got the Express their
last run of the game, stopping
short of Lakeside's tally from the
first three innings.
Russell pitched eight innings,
adding four strike outs to his
record, three walks, and seven
hits.
Errors played a factor in the
game. The Express made three
errors, Lakeside only one.
The Express face a busy week
on the field. As of press time
Tuesday evening, they were host-
ing the Byron team. Wednesday
evening they travel to Strathroy,
and host Tillsonburg on Sunday
at 1 p.m.
