As a matter of fact, many of these well-groomed treasures can be seen just by walking in local neighbour- hoods - although most people don't get a chance to see the interior of such houses. That's why the the Exeter United Church decided to sponsor a 'Sum- mer's Walk' tour of six homes in town. Jo -Anne Dinney, who is helping organize the event and has her home in the tour, said the church fund- raising committee thought this would be a great way to raise money. "It was Ila Mathers came up with the idea," Dinney said. And for the past four months the committee has been busy finalizing details of the event. But it's not just members of the United Church involved in the tour. "Some are members of the church, others have just kindly of- fered to be part of it, which is really wonderful," Dinney said. The hothes in the tour are older, well-established houses that have a distinct history within the town. Dinney said the homes are situ- ated with in eight blocks of each other so visitors won't have too far to walk, although they should wear comfortable shoes to better enjoy walks in some of the backyard gar- dens. To make the tour a bit like a treasure hunt, the church committee designed passports for the visitors which have a map so the homes can easily be found. As well, the passport has a brief description about each home and its history. Tour guides will also be on hand at each home to direct visitors, stamp their passports and answer any questions. Dinney encourages people start the tour randomly at any one of the six homes. That way congestion can be avoided. And since the tour is spread over two days, people can choose to see three homes each day, rather than rushing through all six homes in one day. Dinney said the tour will go on rain or shine. As well, people can pick up tick- ets and passports for the tour all weekend long at the Old Town Hall. Even though this is the first time the tour has been put on by the committee, Dinney said they hope to make this an annual event. "It should make for a fun week- end," she said.
