In making the presentation, Rev. Bruce Pocock said, "It is my pleas- ure to present this damaged crucifix to this church's safekeeping, as a memorial to all the men and wom- en who died in the two great wars, but especially to Rev. Ted Brain M.C. and all the chaplains who served and died in the service of their Lord and country in all the wars of this Dominion of Canada." Rev. Brain was a chaplain with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengar- ry Regiment during World War II. He and his regiment were part of the battle for Normandy and then on through the coastal lands of France, Belgium and Holland. They saw a great deal of action throughout that campaign. Many of the regiment were killed or wound- ed including Rev. Brain who only just survived his injuries. During one of the engagements, the enemy had hidden themselves in a church and were using it as an observation post and a gun em- placement. In the course of the fire - fight, the church was not only taken but it was completely destroyed. A soldier who was part of the capture rescued the cross, but it was badly damaged by the fire. The arms had been burned off, and the rest of the crucifix was badly charred. With loving care the soldier cut away the charred wood, and re- shaped the Christ to a recognizable form. At the end of the war, the cross was given to chaplain Brain as a token of appreciation for all he had done for that soldier and his comrades of the regiment through- out the conflict. While Rev. Pocock was a Curate at Bishop Cronyn Memorial, Rev. Brain served as an honorary assist- ant and was a much loved mentor and counsellor. Pocock says, "Shortly after I ar- rived at Cronyn, we learned that Rev. Brain had terminal cancer, and the student now became his minister and fellow traveler as he went through those difficult days of dying. Before his death, he instruct- ed his wife Mary Joan to give the crucifix to his former student be- cause he would know what to do with it." The Lucan minister continued, "For about 12 years 1 did not know what to do with it. But on this eve of the 50th anniversary of D Day, I believe it is time to bring the cruci- fix back into a church of God where it was originally placed in some unknown French church by some unknown French craftsman." • STEA+Eu TOWNSHIP NOTICE OF STREET RE- NAMING IN THE POLICE VILLAGE OF CREDITON, TOWNSHIP OF STEPHEN By authority of the Municipal Act, R.S.O. 1990 Chapter 302, Section 210 (111) TAKE NOTICE that the .runcil of the rlbwnship of Stephen intends to pass a by- law on Tuesday, July 5, 1994, to rename the following streets in the Police Village of Crediton.
