CREDITON - As if celebrating
his 40th wedding anniversary
wasn't enough, Carl Stuckless, of
Crediton, decided to include his
long lost sister in family festivities
on Saturday.
After 53 years of separation Mar-
ion March, of Kitchener Ontario,
was finally united with her brother
and his five children and nine
grandchildren after searching for al-
most 20 years.
"It's like we were never parted,"
said March breathlessly as she
wiped away her tears. "I always
knew about him but never knew
how to go about finding him."
It was a complicated turn of
events that eventually led Stuckless
to his sister. "I've been looking
since 1975. I had been back home,
to Newfoundland, to search many
times, but had come up with noth-
ing." Carl and his wife Shirley
have written to many Stuckless
families hoping to get a reply.
"Nine times out of 10 we never
heard anything back."
In the end it was a genealogist in
Bracebridge who filled in the miss-
ing piece for Stuckless. He knew
of another Stuckless who turned
out to be Carl's half brother.
At the same time March, who
now goes by her married name, had
been looking for a Carl Ryan; una-
ware that he had kept his mother's
maiddn name.
In 1940, when Stuckless was
$ye, ab1 . mother passed away,.
March was 11. Both of the chil-
dren's father's had been separated
from their mother, so the children
parted ways to each live with their
father.
Stuckless was later adopted by
the Harnums, of Howley New-
foundland, where he lived until
joining the Armed Forces at age 18.
March lived unhappily with her fa-
ther and step -mother.
The first time Stuckless spoke to
his sister was in February after she
called him. March said she
couldn't put into words how it felt
to finally meet her brother.
"When dad found Marion it was
such a missing link in his life. You
should have seen the difference in
him. He's been a nervous wreck,"
said Dan Stuckless, Carl's son.
And, according to the rest of his
family, the smile hasn't left his face
for months.
"Even if we part we will always
stay in touch," said March. "We've
talked and talked, but there is still
so much more to talk about yet."
Stuckless and March plan to take a
vacation together sometime this
summer, but for now she is spend-
ing a few days meeting the nieces
and nephews she never knew she
had.
"I'd really like to meet some of
the cousins from dad's side of the
family," Dan Stuckless added. Shir-
ley Stuckless says that a large fami-
ly reunion will likely be held. In
the mean time, the family will be
taking some short trips to show
March the area.
The reunion was memorable for
all of the Stuckless'. As a way of
welcoming Marion into their family
they presented her with a sweatshirt
with a full family photo on it. A
new family she will treasure for-
ever.
