Johnson wins regionals easily
A 61.64m personal best has him looking at OFSAA
ESSEX - South Huron District High School's javelin star Randy John-
son came through with a personal best throw to win the Ontario Regional
track and field finals in Essex Friday.
Johnson kept his javelin aloft for 61.64 metres, about six full metres
ahead of the second place finisher.
With his regional meet win now behind him, he has his mind firmly
fixed on this Friday morning's OFSAA finals in Kitchener. His goal is to
push his performance just a little further, and set another personal best.
1 know there's one other guy throwing 60 -plus, so it's going to tough,"
he said. "1 don't want everybody to expect me to win."
However. he has cause to he hopeful. The fact he broke his own record
by nearly three feet puts him in thc top-ranked high school javelin com-
petitors in the province. He will be watching for the Toronto Star's rank-
ings to be published this week to see how close he is to being in the top
five or 10.
"1 can't concern myself with what other guys are throwing," he reminds
himself. "My coach tells me to go out and try for another personal best."
Although the OFSAA javelin gold medal has been awarded for much
more modest throws than what Johnson is routinely capable of, he doesn't
expect an easy ride.
"I think this is one of those years when there are three guys throwing
around 60," he said.
Becaus:. his 61.64 metre throw breaks the 200 foot barrier. some Amer-
ican universities are expressing some interest in adding him to their track
teams. There's even talk of scholarships.
"It's all talk now, though," cautions Johnson.
Right now, he remains firmly focused on the six throws he has to deliver
Friday morning.
"If the weather's not good, 59 could win," he said. "I think there'll be a
few good throws that day: hopefully by me, and probably by a few other
guys.,,

TO FIGHT... OR NOT TO FIGHT
1 realty have to laugh w -hen people .ay, "h'.J €a dig hockey y in the
play-offs and there is no fights." Yeah. and you could also say "look
at the Canada Cup and the great hockey plated !here. and no
fights." Yeah. right!. but the sante folks tail to see the sth work.
and it's unbelievable.
Check the players when they're being interviewed on TV, their
faces look like patchwork. Dougie Gilmour had 38 stitches in the
face with 3 different cuts in 3 different series. Sometimes the players
look like they've tangled with Zorro, but all the do-gooders arc hap-
py though, because there is no fights.
1 remember when I was one of the
coaches for the Canada Cup. I could
not believe the welts on the players
bodies after playing thc Russians. They
were masters with thc sword. (and I'm
referring to their sticks). No fights
though, and again thc bleeding hearts
say 'see what great hockey in the Cana-
da Cup and there's no fights."
