Steckle defends rights to own firearms
GODERICH - Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle has made it clear he
defends the rights of rural residents to own firearms.
Even though the Liberal government is preparing tougher restric-
tions on guns in Canada, Steckle said, in an interview with the Toron-
to Globe and Mail, that he defended the rights of law-abiding rural
Ontario constituents to own firearms.
"We don't need more laws on guns; what we need is tough enforce-
ment of the ones we have, Steckle told the Globe.
Expanditt8 further on his comments, the MP said he believed cur-
rent firearms laws and regulations are already sufficient. Referring to
Bill C- 17, Steckle said the government has gone far enough with gun
control.
"The problem with the law today is that it is not being enforced
against criminals by the justice system," said Steckle later. "The gov-
ernment needs to make sure that prosecutors do not plea bargain away
long sentences in gun -related crimes and that the courts issue the
toughest sentences possible under the law."
"Law abiding citizens who own guns for recreational or sporting
purposes are not a danger to society," insisted Steckle. "We need to
deter crime by other means. Criminals do not purchase guns through
legitimate means; therefore [they] will not be affected by further gun
control."
However, unlike some Reform Party members that have advocated
Canadians should be entitled to self-protection with firearms, Steckle said
that is not something he supports.
"Under no circumstances do I advocate taking the law into one's own
hands and using guns for protec-
tion. That is what government is
there to provide. We need to fo-
cus on crime -prevention initia-
tives and develop a new strategy
that focuses on the root causes
of criminality," he said.
Steckle promised that if local constituents write to him about their views
on gun control, he will forward their comments to justice minister Allan
Rock.
Rock earlier in the year upset firearms owners in Canada by calling for
increasing restrictions on certain weapons, including a complete ban on
handguns. Police currently allow handgun purchases to registered target
shooters and certified collectors.
Critics of Rock's proposal pointed out recently publicized shootings in-
volved the use of sawed-off shotguns, a type of weapon prohibited in Cana-
da for decades. The Globe article pointed out several Liberal MPs share
Stickle's view that the party is trying to respond to crime rates in a "politi-
cally correct" manner by toughening gun laws while failing to toughen the
criminal justice system as a whole.
"Law abiding citizens who
own guns for recreational
or sporting purposes are
