Dear Editor: On May 2, the Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) Parents' Liaison Committee made a presen- tation to the Huron County Board of Education at their regular meeting, asking for their consideration of an alternate solution to the CHSS/shared Catholic high school dilemma. The presentation was entitled "Unified School Concept. - the Madawaska Solu- tion", a brief summary of which is attached. This proposal outlines a common-sense, afford-- ble solution that has been implemented successfully by the Madawaska Valley District High School in Barry's Bay, Ontario, addressing both the need for Catholic education and the economic realities of the day. The unified school described is surely a mod- ern, state-of-the-art secondary school; educating in a climate that promotes unity among students and staff of all religions. The opportunity for all stu- dents to participate in Religious Educcrion courses is an excellent addition to the curriculum and should produce a student v,ith an appreciation of all faiths and religious backgrounds. In addition, the Madawaska approach respects the wishes and wisdom of the community's taxpayers. The costs of the facilities required to provide the services described would be but a fraction of the costs outlined to either divide CHSS or to build a new Catholic high school in Huron County, dealing more likely in thousands of dollars as opposed to millions of dollars. This is 1994, not 1974, and it is Huron County, not suburban Toronto. In conclusion, please consider the preceding pro- posal for the merits that it holds and for the tax dol- lars that it would free -up, leaving funds available for health care or other much needed services in Huron communities. It would be sad to lose an opportunity to truly harmonize and strengthen our community and to miss the chance to demonstrate to others that Huron is an innovalive leader in education. Respectfully, Wm. Steenstra, Chairperson, CRSS Parents' Liaison Committee Multi -family GARAGE & BAKE SALE CREDITON UNITED CHURCH Sat. Ontario trained horses won 8 of 12 titles... Dear Sports Editor: As a regular reader of your newspaper, I would like to make you aware that a large portion of your readership (valued customers) are devoted harness racing fans like myself. Your coverage of our fa- vourite sport is quite limited and I thought it might he as a result that you are unaware of some of our everyday accomplishments and contributions. Harness racing in Ontario is very job -creative in that it employs directly, and indirectly, in excess pf 30,000 men and women. Racing has no employ- ment barriers and the overwhelming majority of the work is of a hands-on experience. Currently, Ontario is host to eighteen (18) Stan- dardbred (harness) racetracks and over two dozen teletheatre (off-site) wagering locations. in 1994, 6.1 million harness racing fans will attend a racing program in Ontario which includes over 4,100 com- bined days of exciting entertainment. Wagering rev- enues from those who choose to bet will contribute to the Provincial Treasury $41.5 million in gross pari -mutual taxes. As you can see, Ontario Harness racing generates large revenues, creates thousands of jobs and contributes substantially to the good health and fiscal stability of Ontario. Throughout the world, Ontario horsemen and women arc recognized as the leaders in harness rac- ing excellence. Annually, Ontario horses dominate the North American season ending Awards and this year voting results were no different. In 1993, the United States Trotting Association had 12 horse cat- egories that each select a dominant horse and Onta- rio owned or trained horses won eight of the 12 Ci- ties. These include two-year-old winners Wesgate Crown, Freedom Friend and Armhro Monarch. Three-year-old Presidential Ball and Ellamony and Aged Trotting horse Earl, Aged Trotting mare Life- time Dream, Aged Pacing horse Staying Together. Staying Together also won the prestigious USTA Horse of the Year honour for owner Bob Hamather of Exeter, Ontario. In Europe, Ontario horses and drivers also fare quite well and much of Europe's prize trotting stock has "Ontario Roots". in 1992 Sweden's premier race of the year the Sovalia Elitlopp was won by the trotting sensation "Billyjojimbob" owned by Mike and Lori Wade of Seagrave and expertly driven by Sunderland's, Murray Brethour. In closing, as you can see in this short letter Onta- rio men, women, and horses dominate the harness racing world and we receive very little recognition for our efforts. For your next harness racing story, call the Ontario Harness Horse Association should you require any facts. The 0.H.H.A. office is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and their telephone number is (905) 854-2221. Thanks for your atten- tion. Yours sincerely Richard Morrissey Exeter Editor Adrian Harte replies: Although we are aware of harness racing events in Ontario, there is no active track within the Times -Advocate's cover- age area. As a local, community-based paper, we have no plans to extend our horse racing coverage beyond the occasional features on successful racers from this area. Estate Household Auction Thursday evening.
