This, the third game of the sea- son, leaves the team with a 2-1 record as they were set to face Strathroy Tuesday evening. Against Listowel, the Express started in a big way, with a seven -run first inning. Doubles by Dave Rus- sell and Kevin Drager capitalized on two walks and one error given up by Listowel pitching. In the second inning BiII Glover used a single to eventually make his way around the bases and steal home. Two more runs were added to the board in the fifth inning on hits by Scott Russell, Doug Schade, and Bill Glover. The Legionnaires two runs came in their sixth in- ning on three hits and one walk. Scott Russell pitched all seven innings for the Ex- press, giving up only three walks and claiming five strike outs. Fred Gregus can just about hear the ball whistling in his right ear as he tries a feet -first landing into third base. The ball beat him to the base, and he was tagged out in last Tues- day evening's opener for the Exeter Express against the Listowel Legionnaires. Face Falcons Saturday Centennials shut out Nairn, 3-0 EXETER - The Exeter Centenni- als senior soccer team shut out their old rivals from Nairn Sunday evening. A 3-0 score, credited in part to some outstanding saves in net by goalie George McEwan, was the fi- nal result of a home game played in good weather. The Centennials scored midway through the first half on "a brilliant goal" by Jeremy Wright, who kicked a waist -high airborne hall into the far top corner of the net. Two more goals were scored by Aaron Weston and Charlie Wise in the second half, making for a 3-0 shutout for Exeter. Coach Jeff Playfoot said the team showed a sound defensive posture through the game, and kept possession of the ball at every opportunity. Despite injuries, Fury defeat Delhi 3-1 By Jason McFalls EXETER - Sunday, the Exeter Fury defeated the visiting Delhi Royals 3-1. After losing a player to an injury early in the game, the Fury were left with no substitutes and played a lot of the game with only ten players due to other inju- ries. The Fury got on the scoreboard first as Dan Martens was hauled down inside the penalty area and then picked the corner on the penal- ty shot. In the second half Mark Brintnell made it 2-0 as he found the corner from in close. Soon after Martens got his sec- ond of the game on a fine effort as he eluded the goalie and headed the hall into the empty net. Exeter's de- fense played a solid game to keep Delhi scoreless until the Royals scored on the last play of the game. Brintnell played a strong game for the Fury and Martens was a constant threat around the net. The seniors won the title, but lost the Huron -Perth final to Stratford Central Friday afternoon. WOSSA comes to South Huron Shootout costs senior boys Huron -Perth title EXETER - A "silly little shoot- out" cost the South Huron Panthers the senior boys Huron -Perth soccer final Friday afternoon. Stratford Central fought off the home team all through the game, leaving both scoreless. Coach George McEwan said he can't un- derstand why soccer requires a 1 shootout to settle a tic, rather than an overtime period. "It's always baffled me, even in the World Cup, they don't keep playing," he said. The Panthers lost the shootout 4- 3. South Huron goals were scored by Jeff Lingard, Dan Martens, and Jamie Dougall. "We were the better team all the way through the game," insisted McEwan. but admitted Stratford frustrated the efforts of even the strongest players. "They held us off - our shooters didn't find the net," he said. South Huron has lost the Huron - Perth final five times to Stratford Central in the past seven years, "so I'm getting used to being the brides- maid," said McEwan. The Panthers won the Huron title last Tuesday afternoon when they hosted F.E. Madill. However, the seniors will get a shot at the WOSSA playoffs when they host the tournament this Thursday and Friday. Although seeded last of the six teams, it will he South Huron's first shot at the WOSSA title since 1985. Strat- ford, as Huron -Perth champions will be seeded second, theoretically giving them "an easier time getting through to the playoffs," explained McEwan.
