It might require a personal -hest ef- fort. hut javelin thrower Randy Johnson says he's up to the task. Johnson, still riding high after winning the senior boys javelin at WOSSA last Tuesday with a 59.66 metre throw. In windy six -degree weather, Johnson thinks he did pretty well. Given better condi- tions, and a strong belief that he's yet to peak this season, he says he's ready to go past the 60 metre mark. "I feel it was a good throw in those conditions," he said of his WOSSA win. "It's only a metre off my PB [personal best[." Johnson's best throw was 60.94 metres, and he thinks he can break the 61 metre mark at the regional track and field finals in Essex Fri- day. "1t all depends on the weather," he said, hut either way he's con- fident he's going to come out near, or at the top. Johnson's javelin career has real- ly taken off now that Derek McMil- lan, a graduate of London's Laurier, has taken a scholarship in South Carolina. "Derek's gone," said Johnson, and that leaves the limelight to him. The record for the regional finals is around the 65 metre mark. Is it unreachable. "1 could peak that day," said Johnson. "That's a big leap though, four metres." But he isn't ruling it out. "I just go for a personal hest each meet." he said. Other strong performances by South Huron District High School athletes at WOSSA [Western On- tario Secondary Schools Associa- tion' last week included a silver medal in the junior girls javelin by Danielle Miners with a throw of 32.72 metres, and a fifth place by Jeremy Horn in the junior boys high jump. Randy Johnson says he's ready to go for the Gold. 00 log pGS k t0 Gov Over hoose from • 0 • II 4 DAYS ONLY WED. -SAT. Return from high -scoring tournament Junior Panthers to take on St. Mike's for league title EXETER - The junior girls Panther soccer team are looking forward to today's game in Stratford. There they will meet the St. Michael's team for the Huron - Perth final, the top title in the league. Last Tuesday, the junior Panthers faced their Gode- rich Vikings competition, winning 1-0 on a lone goal scored by Katie Webber. The game, however, was a little lopsided, with the Viking's goalie not getting much rest in either half. The girls travelled to West Lorne Friday for some tournament practice, and came away with a win in the consolation final on a 4-1 game record. Only two goals were scored against them, explains coach Kay Gardner, whereas they chalked up a 12 -goal total against their challengers. The high scores were the result of a new tactic on the field. "They play a running and passing game," said Gard- ner of the Panthers' usual play, but the girls were asked to take more chances on shooting. "It paid off," she said. Bad weather has also dogged the team throughout the season, and today's game in Stratford might also be under Tess than perfect skies. "They're calling for rain and thunderstorms," said Gardner. "That's typical...maybe it'll give us an advan- tage, I don't know." Gardner said the team were approaching the final with a fair amount of confidence - they've only had two goals scored against them all season by other jun- ior teams. Another shutout might be in the works. Next year, about half the team will be ready to move up to senior play, where they may get a shot at WOS- SA or OFSAA. "They should do well in senior," predicted Gardner. Presley Mayer keeps the ball well away from her Goderich Viking rival in the junior girls soccer final last Tuesday afternoon. The strong junior team won the title, and are preparing to take on Stratford's St. Michael's team today. 1 The Only Place In Town That Sells Fresh Tigershark® .4 BEFORE YOU HEAD 0 .• THE WATEFf, HEAD OUT TO SEE US - YOUR LOCAL TIGERSHARK® DEALER.
