Quiz show challenges students' ability
EXETER - For a group of stu-
dents at South Huron District High
School, the month of May means a
lot more than just crunch time be-
fore June exams, it also means the
end of another season of competi-
tion in Reach For The Top.
For those who haven't seen the
program on television, Reach For
The Top is a student trivia show.
The play is fast and
the topics diverse -
ranging from history,
medicine, modern
sport and music - to
geography and current
affairs.
Basically partici-
pants require a lot of
brain power.
"It's like jeopardy,
but the questions are a bit more dif-
ficult," said Barbara Golding teach-
er/coach of the SHDHS team.
In fact, she said the jeopardy peo-
ple have picked a number of Reach
For The Top winners to try out for
the jeopardy program.
No one from South Huron has
not been chosen ypt although the
South Huron teams have done quite
well in competition over the years.
Except for last year, SHDHS has
managed to make it to the provin-
cial level for five years. This year
made six.
Just a few weeks ago, the stu-
dents competed at the provincial
championship, hav-
ing won the zone
championship in
April.
That meant com-
peting with 34 teams
from across Ontario
at the University of
Western Ontario.
Unfortunately
South Huron wasn't
one of the 10 schools to go on the
the national level.
But they did get a chance to be
part of the program taping which
was aired locally. The program
will also he rc-televised on TV On-
tario at a later date.
"It's like
jeopardy, but
the questions
are a bit more
difficult,"
"In the best showing over the
years they ended up fifth in prov-
ince," Golding said.
"That's pretty good when you
consider we're going up against
bigger schools that have more stu-
dents to chose from for the team,"
she said.
There are five players on the
South Huron team although only
four play in competitions.
When putting a team together,
Golding said she looks for students
that have a• lot of general knowl-
edge.
South Huron has both a junior and
senior team and while both were
zone winners, only senior teams go
on to provincial competitions.
The teams begin practice in Sep-
tember. "We try to practice every
day," Golding said.
"The Reach for the Top organiza-
tion gives us practice packs of trivia
questions," she said.
"The students work very hard."she
said. "After that, it's just a matter of
studying trivia," she said.

MOSS
otsc$
Mark Coulthard
Moss can sometimes be a problem in lawns 11 often occurs in moist and heavily
shaded areas Moss is lush. bright green, fine textured and low growing
The best Moss control is achieved by improving the lawn environment Pruning
overhanging trees will let the sunlight in and increase air circulation Fertilize the
lawn properly to encourage the grass plants It is very difficult for Moss to exist
under fertile conditions
If Moss is a constant. serious problem in your lawn, you may wish to purchase a
Moss control material After the Moss control is applied and the Moss dies. it
should be raked up Additional applications of Moss control can be repeated as
necessary. Fertilizer and correct lawn maintenance practices are critical when
attempting to control moss
