In EI Sal- vador your first offence is your last. In Grand Bend the Server Interven- tion Program (S.I.P.) helps prevent drunk driving by teaching responsi- ble serving. Servers, bartenders, door staff, and security from Kars through out (;rand Bend attended the fur- hour course Monday evening at the Main - street Hotel. "Bar owners are getting sued. or losing their businesses, fib they are protecting themselves with S.I.P.," said Instructor Marc Kovaks. "A lot of hotel managers require that all of their staff have the certificate." " We don't discourage drinking, having a good time, or making a fair profit, we just want to prevent problems" The program was the result of pressure by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the rising number of civil liability suits. The Addiction Research Foundation founded the program in 1986. Since then they have trained all the staff at O'Toole's franchises, at Maple Leaf Gardens, and at many resorts in the prov- ince. Kovacs says that by learning to serve properly, Kars can cut the risk of liability suits and license re- moval by preventing intoxication, and learning how to manage intoxi- cated patrons. "Signs of impairment are not al- ways obvious," says Jaquline Muir - head, S.I.P. Instructor, "If people don't get served at one place they'll har hop until they do get served. So just because someone just ar- rived doesn't mean he's sober." Despite the alternatives if a suit is filed, some har owners are afraid they will lose money, so they don't take the course. "We don't discourage drinking, having a good time, or making a fair profit, we just want to prevent problems," says Kovacs. Both instructors were surprised at the low turnout this year. They suspected many servers may al- ready be certified, and coming hack for their second year. i s DAY TRIPS Blue Jays vs Yankees June 11, 12 Canada's Wonderland July 23 Crazy for You Sept. 21 Showboat Oct.26 OVERNIGHT TRIPS Branson hosted by Jack Riddell Sept. 21-28 hanksgiving in Las Vegas Oct. 7-10 Holland America Caribbean ,ruise Nov. 10-20 CALL FOR DETAILS Ellison Travel 322 Main St. Exeter NOM 151 Phone 519-235-2000 .r :ii 65- 2 AQUAIIIY MFMORiAL NEED NOT BE E7USI NELSON MONUMENTS .
