Senior Games
Winners to compete
in Strathroy
EXETER - A new group of champions emerging from the Exeter area
are preparing to advance to provincial finals.
"The idea of the games is to get seniors participating and being active.'
said Exeter recreation director Lynn Farquhar of the 20 winners in the
Senior Games competition. The 55 -plus athletes competed in slims such
as: carpet bowling, cribbage, euchre, crokinole, shuffleboard, darts, and
bridge held at different locations throughout Exeter.
The winners of each are travelling to Strathroy June 20-21 to compete in
regional games which include Middlesex and Perth county players. Ap-
proximately 800 to 1,000 representatives will be attending.
Farquhar says she hopes the seniors will continue to participate in the
various events after the completion of the formal games.
Unfortunately some events, the triathalon, swimming, walking. and ten-
nis, had no entrants. Farquhar explains that participation is open for any-
one who is interested in coming out. She would like to see all the events
tilled next year.
The number of participants has already doubled since last year. Farqu-
har attributes this to the involvement from seniors at Riverview Estates
"Actifest", the provincial level games held every two years, will he host-
ed by Sudbury later on this summer.
Dart players, Harry Puttock and Ray Warner, who were omitted from
last week's list of winners, will also be advancing to Strathroy.
McCann now
heads Hawks
executive
EXETER - With hopes for a bet-
ter '94-95 season ahead, the Exeter
Hawks has elected a new execu-
tive.
Tom McCann, the new president
of the team's executive said the an-
nual meeting last Wednesday eve-
ning wasn't well attended - 10 peo-
ple - but much was accomplished.
All top executive positions were
filled, and seven of the 10 directors
positions are filled. Anyone inter-
ested in being director is welcome
to give McCann a call, he said.
First and second vice presidents
of the team this year are Wayne
Dickins and Bill Farquhar. Secre-
tary and treasurer positions were
filled by Sharon Lynn and Dan
Meidinger. Directors include Kar-
en Dickins, Larry Lynn, Ken Du-
rand, Laurie Lavier, Al Lavier, Les
Gardiner, and Derek Schwartzen-
truber.
Andy McIntyre will be serving as
past president.
One of the first duties for the
new executive will be to decide
who will coach and manage the
Junior D team next year. Applica-
tions were being received up to
Saturday.
"We will hopefully be making
the decision by the end of May,"
said McCann.
Even though the team advertised
the positions, it doesn't mean coach
and general manager George Pratt
is out of a job. McCann said Pratt
has applied for one of the posi-
tions, and the executive will be in-
cluding him while making their de-
cision.
The Hawks are also broke, hav-
ing run up another deficit over the
course of the season. Fundraising
over the summer will play an im-
portant part of putting the team's fi-
nances back in order before the
season opens.
"I don't remember the last time
the Hawks didn't start a season
with a deficit," said McCann.
Overall, the team is looking
ahead to a better perforniance next
season. A disappointingly early
elimination in the playoffs was
likely linked to the fact that the
team lost man; veterans last sea-
son, and went to the ice with 11
new players - not that new talent
isn't seen as important. McCann
said the Hawks arc hoping to re-
cruit a few top graduates from the
Midget league this fall.
