Both Panther soccer teams finish first
EXETER - Both South Huron Panthers boys
soccer teams finished first in their divisions
last week. Both teams also chalked up con-
vincing 7-0 victories against their Clinton ri-
vals Thursday afternoon.
The junior Panthers went undefeated in their
season, except for a couple of tournament loss-
es. Seniors only lost a couple of games, but
coach George McEwan promised "the prob-
lems were fixed."
Tuesday morning, as of press time, McEwan
was readying his teams for the Huron finals in
the afternoon. South Huron would he hosting
the teams from Wingham's F.E. Madill.
If the junior win, they would advance to
play the top Perth team to decide WOSSA rep-
resentation. If the seniors win, they would
host their Perth rivals in Exeter. Both games
will be played Friday.
McEwan appeared confident the teams
would do well.
"We have an advantage with the minor soc-
cer program being as strong as it is," he said.
Backgrounds in minor soccer mean the jun-
ior team has a "deep" lineup, he said. At the
senior level, competition is tougher, he admit-
ted, but said Marty DeBrun, Jeff Lingard. and
Dan Martens make up a strong core of the
team.

May lose assistance
EXETER - Long a contributor to the finances of the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre, Stephen Township may be bowing out of its assistance to
the Exeter centre.
Reeve Tom Tomes told the South Huron Recreation Centre board Thurs-
day that since Stephen Township has taken responsibility for running the
Huron Park Recreation Centre once Centralia College closes, the mu-
nicipality's recreation budget will be stretched.
Should the township have to take over the centre beyond the present
temporary arrangement, then Stephen may have to forego the $5,000 a
year it contributes to the South Huron Recreation Centre, explained
Tomes.
