Facing Goderich for Huron title
Panther girls score 10 goals
in last two league games
EXETER - The senior Panthers girls soccer tears
blasted past the Wingharn team with a 6-1 win in
their final league game last Wednesday afternoon.
The rainy -day victory came on the heels of a 4-0
victory against Seaforth the day before.
"Since our tournament last weekend, we've scored
a lot of goals," said coach Jim Workman.
He hoped that aggressive. goal -scoring momentum
would be following the team into its last game
against Goderich Tuesday afternoon.
Goderich finished the season one point ahead of
South Huron, meaning the Panthers need both points
of a win to decide the Huron champions. The game.
being played as of press time, will send its winners
on to challenge Perth's best, and then on to WOSSA

Old hockey victory banners

EXETER - Past hockey victories
may be just memories unless the
mementoes can be kept in better
shape, the South Huron Recreation
('entre Board is warning.
The board expressed concern at
Thursday's meeting that sotne of
the hanners hanging in the arena
"have been around for quite a long
time and looking pretty tough', in
the words of Exeter councillor
Dave t_Irlin.
"Some banners go hack a long,
long time and the board feels that if

Teams will be notified to clean or
repair their old banners, or sec
them taken down. A policy is also
being sought as to how long the
banners are to be displayed in the
arena.
The Recreation Centre. however,
is also taking down a sign of its
own. The lighted sign at the corner
of Main and Victoria Streets is to
be replaced with a more modest
sign pointing the way to the arena.
(lone will be the ability to spell out
messages with moveable letters.
The sign carne under some criti-
cism last tall when a town council-
lor pointed out no one had made
the effort to list the Exeter Fall Fair
on the sign.

Annual salmon and trout
derby kicked off on weekend
GRAND BEND - The weather
was perfect for the 6th annual
Grand Bend salmon and trout derby
which was kicked of this past
weekend.
Veteran anglers along with some
newcomers to the sport set out as
early as 6 a.m. to try their hand at
catching the big one, or at least
nabbing one of the tagged fish that
could net them a $20,000 boat.
"We have about 900 entries in the
derby," said Bob MacEachern, der-
by chairman. "And the weather on
the opening weekend was great."
On opening day 70 fish were
caught with the biggest being just
over 12 pounds which is far less
than the 27 pound winner last year.
By Sunday another 72 fish were
caught. And when the weigh sta-
tions closed Sunday evening, Chris
Keyser, of Hensall, held the record
for biggest catch with his 17.3
pound salmon.
Compared to last years big
catch, Keyser's might seem small.
but MacEachern said the largest
catch by the end of a similar derby
in Sarnia this year only netted at
20 pounder.
"But he'll (Keyser) probably be
knocked down the hoard a
bit...there's still a week to go in the
derby." MacEachern said.
And for those who have tickets to
participate in the derby, their long
hours of patient waiting for the big
one could mean a $4,000 purse for
the higgest salmon and $1,000 for
the higgest trout.
This is in addition to a number of
other prizes and mystery draws.
Express lose
in Tillsonburg
TILLSONBURG - The Exeter
Express senior baseball team lost a

day evening.

in Saturday's game, giving up four
runs. six hits, and three walks. while
chalking up five strike outs. Mike
Agnew took over for two innings.
giving up one run, two hits, three
walks. and making one strike out.
Scutt Russel tied the game with a
home run in the fourth inning, fol-
lowed by a two -run triple from
Donny MacDonald in the seventh.
A single run in the ninth added up
to four runs for the Express. just
short of the Red Socks' score of Live
runs by the bottom of the seventh.
Dave Atthill and Paul Smith were
also part of the Express' four -hit
game. Tillsonburg neatly matched
them with eight hits. however. Off
the Red Socks pitching. Exeter
managed three walks, but had five
strike -outs against them.
The weather was great for the sixth annual salmon and trout
derby on the weekend. Chris Keyser, of Hensall, managed to
catch a 17.3 pound salmon. That was the largest catch by the
end of the weekend, but there are still 10 days left for some-
one to beat hinne out.
