Johnson shatters javelin record
By Fred Groves

GODERICH - It took 13 years to do, but it had to
happen.
Last Tuesday afternoon, South Huron District High
School's Randy Johnson broke the senior hoys javelin
record at the Huron -Perth track and field meet.
Johnson threw the javelin 60.94 metres to shatter
Dave Shaw's old standard of 56.49 set hack in 1981
when Shaw attended Seaforth High School.
"I knew I could do it. I threw 60.70 metres in Till-
sonburg (at the Tillsonburg Re-
lays) and the other meets were
just short of 59 metres," said
Johnson on preparation
for the Huron -Perth
meet.
In his five appearances
at the meet, Johnson won
the midget division
twice, took the event in
his lone year as a junior
competitor and won hack -
to -back senior titles.
Preparing for the provincial meet,
feels confident he can throw farther.
"If I threw 65 metres now, mentally I'd say to 3ny-
self can I keep this up for another four weeks?"
Throughout his training this spring, Johnson was
looking to set a goal of 60 metres and was determined
to set a personal best this track and field season.
"It wasn't a matter of winning or losing. I was com-
peting against myself. I wanted a personal hest and 1
got it."
Johnson has to he considered a strong favourite to
win the event at the provincial meet. In comparison,
the Oxford -Elgin champion, Richard Brown of Arthur
Voaden threw the javelin at 51.84 metres, Rob Wil-
liams of North Middlesex won the Middlesex Confer-
ence at 45.46 metres and Laurier's Dwayne Francois
won the London Conference at 45.72 metres.
Javelin continues to be a strong event for South Hu-
ron as Dennis McCann finished second behind Johnson
with a throw of 43.06. Both qualify for the Western
Ontario Secondary School Association meet in Tillson-
burg on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Danielle Miners won the junior girls event with a
throw of 33.46 metres. She'll go to WOSSA and is
hoping to make it to OFSAA for the third straight year.
The past two years Miners was seventh in the javelin.
In senior girls javelin, Stacey Thurman earned a trip
to Tillsonburg with a 23.50 metres throw good enough
for fifth place while Chrissy Morgan was a close sixth
with a toss of 23.20 metres.
Morgan was second in shotput at 9.18
metres and fifth in discus at 24.16
metres.
Thurman was fifth in shotput
at 8.45 metres and third in dis-
cus at 27.64 metres.
On the track, the wind, rain
gfld.cold did not seem to hamper
the performance of South Hu-
ron's Chad Gilfillan. He was second in
the junior boys 200 metres with a quick
time of 23.9 seconds and third in the 100 metres.
He'll be off to WOSSA this week.
In the midget hoys' division, Mark Bell was third in
the 200 metres at 26.3 and fourth in the 100 metres at
13.2 seconds.
Jeremy Horne won the junior boys high jump as he
cleared the bar at 1.80 metres. Last year, as a first-year
junior he was fourth with a 1.70 metres height.
Also qualifying for WOSSA was Pres Lavicr in the
junior boys' shotput at 10.72 metres. In senior girls'.
Molly McClure was first in the 400 metre hurdles and
third in the 200 metres.
Also representing South Huron but who failed to fin-
ish in the top five and gain a trip to Tillsonburg were
Scott Reid who was eighth in midget boys' long jump.
Tony Hoffman was eleventh in the senior hoys 200
metres and the senior boys' 4x100 relay team was
sixth.
