Fury tie St. Thomas In opener
Senior SOCCC
EXETER - The Exeter Fury started off the season
on a good note but unfortunately, the Exeter Cen-
tennials had a rough start.
Travelling to London, the Centennials dropped
their Western Ontario Soccer League first division
(central) 7-3 to Panhellenic while the Fury, playing
at the Canner's Field managed a 1-1 tie with visiting
St. Thomas in first division east action.
"11 seemed every time we left a man open, they
scored," said Centennials coach Jeff Playfiot of the
loss.
He takes over the team and will be a coach only
and mentioned it makes it a little easier than trying
to be both player and coach.
Scoring for the Centennials, who look to sign up
to 20 players this season were Keo Chansamone,
Mike Troy and Peter Hakvoort.
"We got a couple of red cards near the end of the
game," said Playfoot of the frustration. "Half the
team is new players, it's hard to work together."
The Centennials will try to get on the winning

game
LONDON - By the looks of
the lineup they had for their
opener, the Exeter Express
should have a very solid team
for the 1994 Great Lakes Senior
Baseball League.
While the Express return 13
players, they have also added
newcomers Mike Agnew and
Dave Gingerich. The pleasant
surprise is that outfielder Don
MacDonald, catchcr Kevin Hcrn
and pitcher Kevin Drager all
from the 1988 Ontario champi-
onship team are hack.
Sunday afternoon in London,
the Express went right to work
and brought home an 11-8 win
over the Chiefs.
The visitors jumped into a 2-0
lead in their half of the first but
the Chiefs made it close
throughout as Exeter held a slim
6-5 lead after three complete.
Jt was 8-8 aftcr six innings but
veteran outfielder Fred Gregus
snapped the tie with a Kase hit in
the top of the seventh which
helped score a pair of runs.
Infielder Rob Dickey had a
pair of hits including a first in-
[lillb' dvia lc and also drew a
walk in his five trips to the
plate. MacDonald had a hit and
a walk and stole two bases.
Scott Russell started on the
mound and after threc innings, •
gave up five hits, three walks,
fanned three and allowed no
earned runs. Marty Merner
came on next but injured his
knee and the versatile player
could be out for a while.
Dave Atthill came on in relief
and Rick Boon. pitching the last
two and two-thirds innings,
struck out two and allowed no
hits and no runs.
The Express continue their
season on Saturday when they
head to Tillsonhurg for a I p.m.
start and host Listowel on Tues-
day at 6:30 p.m. in their home
opener at the Alvin Willcrt
Field.

track on Sunday when they host Central America at
4 p.m.
Game still official: At the Canner's Field on Sun-
day, the Fury and St. Thomas had to wait over half
an hour for a referee to show and when one did not,
a carded St. Thomas played decided to do the game
and both teams agreed it would be an official con-
test.
After a scoreless end-to-end first half, Jamie Wul-
terkens scored on a scramble in front of the net but
St. Thomas tied it on a shot that just got over top of
Fury goalie Tim McAllister.
Exeter threatened in the first half as Henri De-
Bruyn shot just wide. The Fury looked strong
throughout the game and received fine efforts from
Mark Brintnell and Jason McFalls.
The Fury need a coach and anyone interested in
lending a hand can call McFalls at 235-0368.

Fighting off two opponents wasn't that hard for Exeter Fury Jason McFalls on this play as he
helped the hosts to a 1-1 tie against St. Thomas Sunday afternoon.
