EXETER - Oh yes, finally after
shovelling snow and cursing the
weatherman, spring is here.
The familiar sounds of 'four' on
the golf courses, 'nice kick' on the
soccer pitches, and 'you're safe', on
the ball diamonds echo throughout
the night air.
Take a walk some night over to
the South Huron Recreation Centre
where on any given night as many
as four ball games and up to three
soccer games could he taking place.
Golf, haseball, softball (fastbali),
soccer and slo-pitch are in their
first few weeks of competition.
While hockey in Exeter and the im-
mediate surrounding area seems to
have a more serious nature to it, the
summer sports are a little more low
key.
Not that they don't try to win, but
all sports seem to have a more re-
laxing air about them.
The following is a brief look at
what's happening around the dia-
monds, pitches and golf courses.
Softball has new rules: Al Harri-
son, president of the Ontario Ama-
teur Softball Association recently
announced some new rules which
involve pitching and the distance
between the hases.
To help put less strain on a pitch-
er's arm, the OASA will now allow
pitchers from the mite division and
up, to put one foot on the ground
and one on the mound.
The distance between the hases
and the distance from the pitcher's
mound to home plate have been in-
creased. Two feet was added 'to the
pitching distance in mite, peewee
and squirt divisions. In mite, the
pitching distance was increased
from 28 to 30 feet and in squirt
from 33 to 35 and in peewee from
38 to 40.
For mite, distance between hases
stays the same at 45 feet, but in the

THE SINGAPORE CANE
Singapore, you gotta love `cm. At one time, it had one of the
highest crime rates in the world, then they said "enough is enough!"
Instead of being easy on punks, dope heads, rapists, murderers and
child molesters they said "now it's our turn to take over", and boy,
do the punks pay big time!
Take for example the chap from kettering Ohio. He thought it
was very funny to spray paint graffiti all over people's cars. A real
joke eh? It backfired and now the joke is on him. Once caught, he
gets sentenced to a fine of $2,000, and the best part of all, 6 strokes
of the cane. I wonder if he's laughing now.
A poll taken in his hometown in the States, to see if he should be
given the cane was 80% in favour of
his punishment. His hometown folks
said "it looked good on him", with
comments such as "If we had the cane
here in American schools, I bet chil-
dren would listen to the adults and
have respect for them." Another stated
"I say go for it!"
One woman said "Cane every single
one of them who doesn't have respect
and I'll bet they'll learn real quick"

squirt goes from 50 to 55 and in
peewee from 55 to 60.
"They've changed the pitching
rule so many times, it's a little
chaotic." said Doug Pearson of the
Exeter Minor Softball Association.
"Ours (association) is a low-level
fun thing," he said of the competi-
tion level.
Pearson, who said there could be
up to 130 youngsters playing soft -
hall in Exeter added about the rule
changes, "I see no reason for it. I
haven't heard anything about it."
Exeter Minor Baseball: Big
change in baseball this year in that
five -pitch and T -hall have been
combined. What that means is that
the younger aged players will have
the Tee but for those who don't re-
quire it, they will be pitched to.
There are five of these teams, and
they are in the tyke division. They
will play amongst themselves usu-
ally at the newly refurbished Pre-
cious Blood Diamond.
Saturday, May 14 is a big day as
Exeter Minor Baseball Association
will host its Opening Day and all
17 teams from tyke to midget are
going to be playing a game. There
will be a food booth, instructional
clinics and displays.
Exeter Minor Soccer: Talk
about an increase, minor soccer
president Bart DeVries says their
registration is up by almost 50.
"It's up, last year there was 260.
We draw from Hensall, Huron
Park, Centralia and Kirkton," said
DeVries.
There seems to be a big surge in
girls soccer as there is an under -19
team, under -17, under -14 and un-
der- I I which, this year, will all
play in the West Middlesex
League.
"It's really tough now," said DeV-
ries of having to find fields for all
the teams to play on. "If we had
more (players) we'd have to have
more fields. Now they practice on
half a field," he said of the younger
teams.
